WARNING: Lots of cursing in this first part of the chapter.
The next couple of days were relatively quiet; I guess everyone was getting used to not having Alice running around all the time. I know for a fact that I was getting used to the silence. Alice was always the one person who would run around, laughing because God knows what; with her, the base was usually a place of laughter. (But not too loud, because if it was any louder the zombies would be on our asses in a minute.) It's kinda ironic honestly. When the outbreak first hit, I had wanted everything quiet, inwardly flinching every time a loud noise was made. But when Alice came, I had learned to appreciate the sound of laughter (any sound really), and with her gone, I found myself hating the silence. It was suffocating.
I rolled over in my bed, unseeingly staring at the wall away from the windows. It was night, and after an exhausting day of dealing with the bickering of the group and helping out around the base, all I wanted to do was just sleep. Only problem was... sleep was eluding me. Even though the news of the group finally bonding together was great (I had found Natalie and Sam cracking jokes with David and Craig in the living room yesterday), my mind was still working on what to do about Tyler; I didn't know how I was going to break the news to him that his fucking fiancé was missing for a whole entire goddamn week!
I got up from my bed and started to pace the length of my room. What the hell was I going to do?! Tyler was in fucking love with Kelly, and if I broke the news to him that the woman he loved was most likely dead, he would be devastated. WhatamIgoingtodowhatamIgoingtodowhatamIgoingtodo. WHAT AM I GOING TO FUCKING DO!
Frustrated, I clenched my hand into a fist a slammed it into the wall. And what a mistake it was. Even though I label myself as a guy who can handle a lot of pain (I played ice hockey as a kid; trust me), I can say that punching the wall hurt like a son of a bitch. "Fuck! Dammit! God motherfucking dammit!" I swore loudly, cradling my hand against my body. Pulling it away for a moment, I saw that my hand was covered in blood and swelling up; bloody gashes criss-crossed my hand. "Aw," I groaned, leaning my head back against the wall, "fuck me." I guess punching a concrete wall isn't one of my greatest ideas, I thought after a minute, and perhaps I hit it a bit too hard.
I sighed, looking for something nearby to wipe down my hand; finding none, I just decided to take off my shirt and cover my hand with it. It was an old shirt anyways, I mused as I pulled it over my head. Just as I was covering my hand I heard someone knocking the door. I inwardly winced. And I also guess that I was a bit too loud as well. I heard another knock on my door, as well as Bobby calling out, "Vanoss? You okay in there? I heard some banging and some cursing-"
"Yeah, yeah," I assured, "I'm fine. I just got a bit frustrated and punched the wall."
"Umm..." Bobby was silent for a moment before he spoke up again, "Do you want me to get Lui?"
"Ah, sure." I scratched the back of my head, "And can you also grab Haley? I need to get back to her about her 'distribution of power' thing."
"Yeah. I'll be back in a minute." I heard the sound of him walking away and knocking on Haley's door, explaining the situation to her when she opened it.
A few minutes later I heard another knock on my door. "Come in," I called, sitting on the bed while cradling my hand. Haley opened the door and walked into my room, coolly assessing the situation before her, although she did blush a little when she saw me sitting shirtless on the bed. She didn't say anything, so I decided to start, "Hey."
"Hi." She nodded towards my hand, "What happened there?"
I glanced down at my bruised and bloody hand and shrugged. "Eh, no big deal. Just got a little frustrated with a little issue of mine and decided it would be a good idea to punch a wall. It wasn't such a good idea after all." I laughed softly, but gasped in pain when I accidentally bumped my injured hand against the wall. "Ow." Haley chuckled at my reaction and that chuckle became a laugh when I shot her a dirty look. I scowled, "Can you just help me with this? I can't do much with one hand."
