I guess that there's no shame in saying that when Marcel and I got up to the top of the wall, I almost shit myself.
Tyler, Jonathan and Natalie were already on the wall, probably on the guard duty for the next two hours, and they were taking shots at the zombie horde. They were a stumbling, shambling and tripping mass of bodies that were intent on ripping apart the flesh of the two people running from them. I could hear their moans and cries from the wall, and they were still a good two blocks down the street. Marcel immediately started taking shots of his own at the seemingly endless horde of zombies, making sure to avoid the two figures in the street. I saw one of the figures turn around a fire off a few shots from a pistol into the zombies before twisting back around and running. He held onto the other figure's hand, pulling them away from the bloodthirsty creatures of rotted flesh.
Luke had kept his promise.
I guess that someone had sounded the alarm because pretty soon, the sound of multiple people storming up the steps came from behind me. Ryan and David, whose ribs had healed, both hopped onto the two machine gun encampments that we had on the wall, and started to pour lead into the approaching danger. I saw that everyone else from the group, save Haley and Kat, were on the wall and were shooting their guns as well. Luke and Kelly just kept running, trying their best to ignore the bullets cutting through the air just mere inches from them.
Tyler turned back to me as he reloaded his gun. "What are you doing Evan?!" He screamed, too caught up in the moment to care about codenames. "SHOOT!"
I realized looking down at my hands that I hadn't fired off a single round and had been watching them the whole time. All of a sudden, all my years of criminal activity and training kicked in. I rushed over to the edge of the wall, and raised my AK47, letting loose a stream of hot lead into the mad crowd of zombies. Taking back my usual position of power on the battlefield, I yelled for someone to open up the gate for Luke and Kelly. Not bothering to look who did it, I returned my attention to lighting up the zombies. But no matter how much lead we poured into those damn zombies, they just kept coming. Plus, now they were only one block away from us.
I saw the gate start to roll open and I tapped Jonathan and Brian on the shoulder. "Come on!" I shouted to be heard over the sound of gunfire. "Let's get down to the gate!" They both nodded and followed me down the stairs as I made my way to the gate. By that time, the gate was fully opened and we stepped out into the street, firing at the zombies. Luke and Kelly were still running and were outrunning the zombies. They were going to make it.
That was until Kelly tripped.
It honestly wouldn't have been an issue if her foot hadn't gotten pinned under a stray piece of scrap metal. Luke turned back and started to lift the sheet of metal off of her, but this made him exposed to the approaching horde. I swore before tapping Brain on the shoulder and yelling, "Stay here and cover us! Jon and I are gonna help Luke and Kelly!" I too didn't really care about codenames right now; I was too preoccupied with trying to keep Luke and Kelly alive. He nodded, picking off zombies one by one as Jonathan and I sprinted out to Kelly and Luke. Reaching them, Jonathan and I each took a knee and started to fire at the incoming horde. Zombies fell left and right, and by this point the street was littered with the bodies of the flesh eating bastards.
But they just kept coming.
Reloading, I glanced over at Luke and Kelly. Kelly was still pinned under the metal sheet. Turning my attention back to the zombies, I shouted over the constant din of gunfire, "Luke, hurry it up over there! I'm running low on ammo and I don't know how much longer we can hold them off!" I felt a bead of sweat roll down the side of my face, too preoccupied to wipe it off. I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins but I knew sooner or later I was going to crash, and with all these zombies out here, now wouldn't have been a good time.
