song I recommend for this chapter: Butterflies by Lucy Spraggan

Violet:

I sit at the conference table in my office building, the sound of the radio faintly playing in the background. I hum quietly to myself as I concentrate on finishing my drawing, the sun is beginning to set as I look up to the window. I sigh, checking my phone to see it's the twenty seventh, two more days until Si gets home.

I decide to walk to the coffee shop before going home. I enter and order my black coffee, before sitting in Simon's booth. I sip my coffee and quietly watch as people pass, some couples, some teenagers and a few old people. I unlock my phone and open Snapchat, scrolling through some of the boys' stories until I get to Simon's. I open it and laugh as I see a very drunk JJ falling over his own feet as they try to make it back to the hotel.

"You're almost as blind as Violet, I swear." Simon laughs in the background, making me smile.

I watch Tobi's and Freezy's and see they're having a good time, albeit a little too much to drink but I guess I can't blame them for that.

As I scroll through Instagram, my phone begins to ring, I know exactly who it is and answer.

"Hi mum." I breathe in to the phone.

"Violet?" Her voice is shocked, probably because I never answer.

"Yeah." I reply.

"You sound so different, sweetie." Her voice breaks slightly and I know she's about to cry.

"Well, I am twenty two now mum." I say, watching as my coffee sits motionless in my cup.

"God, twenty two, you're a young woman." She answers.

"What do you want mum?" I ask bluntly.

She hesitates slightly before replying, "I just want to know you're okay."

"I'm fine." I simply say.

"Tell me something, Violet, anything, I haven't seen you since you were nineteen." She shakily pleads.

"I got an apartment, as you know, I have a boyfriend, I-" My mum cuts me off.

"You have a boyfriend?"

"Yeah, thanks for that vote of confidence, mum." I sarcastically reply.

"So, you and Jamie never got back in touch?" She asks.

"What, no, why would we? We broke up when I left uni." I shake my head, knowing she can't see.

"I always thought you guys were so right together." She says.

"Well, we aren't together." I mumble.

"So, who's the new boy?" She asks, like we are mother and daughter again.

"Mum, I-I have to go." I sigh, trying to get out of the conversation.

"Okay, I get it, but-please, think about coming to the wedding, Rob and I would love to see you, bring your new boyfriend." She replies.

"I don't know if that's a good ide-" She, once again, cuts me off.

"It's a great idea, I miss my daughter and want to see her-it's been moved up slightly so Rob and I can go on the cruise we used to always talk about, it's next month, I hope you come."

"Maybe mum, bye." I respond before hanging up.
