Recap:
"You left her out there?!" Lucas yelled at Merliene.
"I assure you she is fine." she said calmly.
"What if Ace is out there? His boss?! Abaddon?!"
Merliene opened her mouth but I was faster. "They wouldn't dare come here. This place is filled with magic that will conquer them. If they are smart, they would never come back."
They all stopped to stare at me. I noticed my Aunt, Rachel, her parents, Alma, Mike, Mark and a few of his friends I haven't met and the maid I met when I first came here- Lacy. My eyes trailed back over to Lucas, who's eyes were wide and full of love and wonder. He slowly advanced towards me and engulfed me in a bone-crushing hug.
"You scared me." Then, he pulled back and checked me out. I smiled and rolled my eyes. "Sei bello." Lucas breathed out. <You are beautiful.>
I heard Merliene's sharp intake of breath and I looked at her questionably. "Are you okay?" I asked her.
"You are her." she breathed out.
"Who? Merliene what's going on?" I was getting worried.
"Persephone. You are the great goddess- Persephone."
***********
I looked at Merliene as if she grew two heads. What was she talking about? Yeah, sure, I know who Persephone is. I took a Greek mythology class before all this crazy stuff happened. When I thought I was normal.
"I think a long talk is in order."My Aunt announced.
I nodded in agreement an started pulling Lucas in the house. Everyone filled in the living room quickly. But the last one, Mark, lingered. I looked at him with confused eyes, wondering what he was waiting for. Lucas was talking to Alma a few feet away.
My eyes landed back on Mark and he met my gaze. He walked closer to me and his eyes traveled lower, his eyes become hooded. Lucas must have sensed my unease, he quickly walked over to me and blocked Mark's gaze- giving him a death glare Mark wouldn't forget.
Lucas turned around. "Go put some real clothes on please. I don't want to jump across the room to punch someone because of the way they look at you."
I giggled, kissed him on his cheek and ran upstairs, vines trailing everywhere. I smiled and opened our bedroom door.
I walked in, eyes trailing from the floor up and stopped. On my bed were a family of foxes. The same foxes I met in the forest by the pond.
The father fox was rolling around on our bed with his three babies. I could tell it was him because he was one, bigger. Two, he had a black line in the middle of his face. I was so shocked in the woods, I never really got to see the beauty in them.
The majority were red foxes. The dad was a deep red with a black line that started from the middle of his ears to his black nose. Two of the babes were a very light red, one of them had no white on her at all. The smallest one had a spot over his right eye. The momma was a white arctic fox. It was weird because I thought they lived more to the arctic tundra. She was all white with black lines surrounding the tip of her tail. The other girl baby was all white as well but had few more black lines.
How they got in here, on my bed? I don't know, but what I did know, is that I'm keeping them. I somehow felt that they had chosen me.
I smiled as they continued to play. Then what looked like the runt of the litter stopped and padded over to me- just like he did in the woods. I lowered myself and he jumped in my lap. He set his paws above my breast and looked me in the eye. I noticed he had a heart-shaped spot over his right eye which made him so much cuter. Then he started licking my face. I fell back and laughed as he jumped all over me.
I heard the door swing open and Lucas' curious voice wafted through the room.
"Hey, what's taking... so...long...," He trailed off and closed the door.
I continued to laugh and wrapped my hands gently around the babe's small belly. I sat up and rubbed my nose on the babe's and he licked my face.
"What's going on in here?" Lucas chuckled and gestured to the foxes.
"I met them in the woods, then I came in here and found them."
"How'd they get in here?" He asked.
"No idea, but I'm glad they did. Ain't that right Stark?" I rubbed the babe's nose.
"Stark?" Lucas chuckled.
"Yup, I just made it up. I like it. The dad over there, with the black line, is Leif. Momma over there is Adriana. The dark red and black baby is Sadie and the white baby is Adelaide. Can we keep them? Please?" I whined.
"Hmmm, let me think about that...," Lucas teased.
"Please?" I said, my voice getting louder. "Look at them! They are so cute!" I whined.
We looked at the foxes laying on our bed. They stopped playing and were now siting up staring at the new face in the room.
"Fine." Lucas said and I jumped in his arms. He chuckled at the impact.
Stark was still in my arms as I planted a kiss on Lucas' lips. Stark whined and tried to climb up Lucas' chest. Lucas laughed and picked up the babe, kissing him on the nose and walking back to the family. He gently set Stark down and went to our closet. Lucas brought out some clothes for me to change into. Putting the clothes in my hands, he pushed me towards the bathroom and told me to change. I chuckled at his eagerness.
I walked into the bathroom and studied myself in the mirror. My body was still covered in leaves. Now with a bigger mirror and a brighter light, I could see everything better. My hair was a lot brighter than I thought, but it could be just the light in here. I closed my eyes and willed my other form back to me. The vines covering my body slowly moved and shifted until they shrunk and disappeared from my body, as if they were never there. I put my grey joggers on with a white off-shoulder t-shirt and graphic cat socks.
"Whats the rush?"
"Merliene is pacing like crazy and everyone is so confused about what happened. They heard you screaming and ran out. Then you came out looking better than ever and that left everyone confused. Well, that and your choice in outfit." I chuckled and shook my head.
Lucas opened the door and I blew kisses at my new foxy family and walked towards the living room.
When we got there, there was so much tension. Not a bad tension, but more of confusion and wonder. My aunt was talking to Rachel and her parents. Alma as talking to Mike and Lucy. But Mark, he was sitting in the corner staring at me. His gaze sent shivers up my spine. Especially when I couldn't tell the emotion in his eye.
"Let's get this over with." I said with a sigh.
