I smiled when I saw him. "Phil!" Dan called to me from in front of the school. "Hey love. Who's that?" He kissed me on the cheek while holding an asleep dil on his hip. We had adopted the 2 year old after child services found him living in a drug house and he's managed to wrap both me and his daddy around his tiny little fingers in the short few months we've had him.
"Oh. Dan this is Michael. Michael this is my husband Dan and my son, dil."  Michaels eyes widened in realization and I laugh. "I hope you don't mind but i have to drop him off at his house and maybe speak to his parents." Dans furrowed his eyebrows but then it seemed to click in his mind as he noticed the bruises and cuts on his face. "Of course! It's no big deal." He smiled and turned around to put little dil in his car seat without waking him.
We drove in a nice silence until it was broken by dil waking up. "Daddy?" He rubbed his eyes and immediately noticed Phil sitting in the front seat next to Dan. "PAPA! PAPA!" He laughed and I reached back and grabbed his hand. "Who that?" He looked over at Michael who had a huge grin plastered on his face. "That's micheal. Say hi." Dil tilted his head, almost as if he was trying to figure out what to make of him.
"Micheal?" He asked and Michael nodded. Dil laughed and reached for his Cheerios, which he then offered to Michael who only laughed and declined the offer. Dil however, wouldn't accept this and starting crying: "no no it's okay here." Michael spoke softly to the kid and grabbed one of the Cheerios and biting into it. Dil accepted the peace offering and started to introduce Michael to his stuffed lion.
While all this was happened Dan looked away from the road over to his husband. Raising his eyebrows, he shot me a look asking if his suspicions were true. I only nodded and looked down at my lap. I hated that it was true. I never wanted anyone to go through what we did. Dan gave me a reassuring smile and gripped my hand with his free one. He squeezed my hand and I took a deep breath. I had to help Michael however I could
"Mr. Lester?" Michael got my attention. "Yes?"
"It's the on the left at the next turn." I smiled and nodded. "Okay thanks." Within moments we pulled up in Michaels driveway. The door to the relatively normal house opened up and out came what I presumed to be Michaels parents. I kissed Dan on the cheek before unbuckling. "I'll only be a moment."
I got out of the car, Michael following close behind me.
"Mikey!" His mother rushed up and hugged him, I smiled. It was a loving sight. "Phil? Is that really you?" I turned and was greeted by the face of someone I never wanted to see again in my life.  Standing in front of me was the reason I hated myself through the majority of my life.
"Hey pj. We really need to talk." He stared at me with wide eyes, before nodding. "Is that Dan in the car? Go ahead and invite him in. I have a feeling we may be a while." I nodded and gestured for dan to get out of the car. He obeyed and followed behind us, dil in tow as we entered the house. "Michael? Can you please go to your room. Your not in trouble. Don't worry." Michaels mom sent him up the stairs before making her way to the lounge where we were currently sat.
"Dan. Phil. Before we start. I... I wanted to apologize." Pj started, "I know it's stupid and not really an excuse but I was going through a lot and took it out on you and I'm so sorry I really hope you can forgive me." He fiddled with his hands. "Dan? Can you go to the kitchen and talk to Michaels mom for a bit? Take dil." He nodded as he got up, giving me a reassuring shoulder squeeze before he left.
