*21 June 2012*

"Wait...if you're from Africa..then why are you white?" My best friend, Tyler, laughs while copying Karen from Mean Girls.

Getting tired of the overly-played movie, she quickly changes the tv to channel 123 and we're immediately greeted by One Direction's "What makes you beautiful"

"IF ONLY YOU SAW WHAT I COULD SEE YOU'LL UNDERSTAND WHY I WANT YOU SO DESTRATELY!!" We jump on the bed and sing along

The song too quickly ends and the lady from the news face is all over the tv screen

"We just got reports from America that they have been experiencing a different act in the...dead?" She says,but you can obviously hear the confusion in her voice

Tyler rolls her eyes but my attention is on the tv.

"We've just received a video of these actions from these...creatures" The lady says again.

The screen suddenly shows.

Monsters...if you can even call them that. All of them are fighting over a,already dead, body.

When they see the camera man they start running towards him...they move fast...so uncontrollably fast.

The next thing you see is the man being attacked and the camera turns black

"So we ask you to be very...." The lady's face vanish from the tv

"Hey!I was watching that!" I say

"Levine,please. Zombies,get real. It's probably just a prank video." You can hear the annoyance in Tyler's voice

"But..what if it's not a joke?"

"Don't be stupid"

"Yeah.." I say but the image never leaving my mind

That night the only thing on my mind was the poor camera man and how he tried to escape,but the though leaving my mind as I fell asleep

"Mother I cant believe you're being so unfair!"

"Levine,I know it's Tyler's birthday tomorrow,but I want to spend some quality time with my only child." My mother says..something in her voice that I can't explain

"Gosh mother. It's my birthday in 2 weeks then I'm 16, I want you to give me freedom. "

"Honey...I saw in the newspaper it said those...things are here. I don't want you to go outside." My mother says with concern in her voice.

"Mom, I'm not a baby anymore. I can take care of myself!"

"Levine no. It's 10 in the evening and I will not let you go outside. Tomorrow okay?"

"Whatever." I say when I storm into my room

Perfect.

Standing up so quietly barely a mouse can hear it I get my backpack with my clothes,toothbrush, and brush.

I peek out of my door.Cost is clear. Sneakily I tiptoe down the hall seeing my mothers light is on.

That's odd

"Mom?" I ask when I past the door. No answer. walking in I stop dead in my tracks,my eyes widening in shock.

With her back turned to me only standing in her underwear is my mother. Blood dripping from her tiny frame..but the thing that catches my attention the most is the huge bite mark on her shoulder.

"Mom?" I ask again,my voice breaking

"Levine,I'm so sorry." She says,still not turning towards me.

"Mother,you knew?" I ask,"You knew about this?" The tears already rolling down my face.

"Levine, I love you." She stops," And I need you to get out of here."

I run to her and hug her," Mommy please,no,please don't leave me." I cry into her other shoulder when we face each other.

"Levine,baby I love you. You need to fight okay?" She says, I can hear she doesn't wanna cry.

"Mommy,don't say goodbye please mommy. I love you." I sob still with my arms around her.

"Levine look at me."

I do as I'm told

"Levine, I know I'm not gonna make it...but you are. Baby you're such a strong person and I need you to fight okay? I need you to survive. I love you so much and I need you to fight for both of us until this is over." She says while looking me in the eye," Now Levine take the car keys and drive...drive as far as you can and get out of here."

I nod. Before I stand up I hug her with all my strength," I love you mom...I promise I'll fight."

"I love you too..now go."

I stand up and collect all the things I need

"Bye Mother." I whisper when I leave the house.

The cold is the first thing that hits me when I run to the car.Seeing fire at almost every house.

Then it hits me.

They're attacking at once. The...monsters are attacking at once.

I drive to her house and see it's like almost every other house. Burned down.

No.

Wait is that...yes it is a body laying on the grass.

I run to the figure to see who it is. Tyler. She must've gotten out. I check her pulse. Nothing.

I let the tears fall again realizing I lost my mother and the person who was like a sister to me...And the worst part is it's her birthday. It's Tyler's birthday.

Then reality strikes me...

I'm alone.
