Sean,
With Lacey's help, it didn't take long to find every tracking device installed. We even re-coded the system to allow us to take control when we needed. I was actually surprised how well Lacey knew her way around a computer. From what I had learned about her, she spent most of her time in the field. I wouldn't have thought she had the time to learn anything but battle strategy.
"All right, gear up people. If you're hungry, get it to go, we're burning daylight," Morgan yelled. "Hey kid, come here." I looked around realizing she was calling me.
"Captain," I answered, walking over to the dpv she was looking over and stood at attention.
"You can drop the formalities, we both know that this is no longer a military operation," I nodded and relaxed. "I need you to take the lead on Rover one, you've got Izzy and Duke, you're in charge of the rig, stay sharp out there." My eyes widened in surprise that she'd put me in charge. I figured she would have put Lacey or Duke in charge, hell she even seems to prefer Isaac over me.
She must have noticed the look on my face and explained. "Look, I've been watching you, you're smart and work fast, and your file says you were one of the best in your battalion." I must have still looked a bit confused.
"We don't know what kind of shit we're getting into out there. Let alone who we can really trust. We have to work as a cohesive team," she sighed. "I need to know I can count on you out there."
I looked directly into her eyes. "You will never have to worry about that," I insured, "If there's anything you should know about me, it's that I always finish the missions I am assigned," I answered, just as the rest of the team made their way back towards our patrol vehicles.
"Fair enough," Morgan answered, "go grab your gear." On the way back to the bunk room, I passed Mia, she smiled and gave me a nod. There was something familiar about her, but I just couldn't place it, This had been bugging me ever since we got there. I grabbed my bag and stopped off at the main mess hall shoving some fruits into the sack along with a couple of sandwiches. Who knew when we'd have a decent meal again.
"Let's move out," Morgan called out. She jumped into the driver's seat of their vehicle as I did the same in ours. "Take us out O'Riley." Morgan's voice crackled through the radio.
We drove the twenty kilometers towards Ra's Ajdir. The town was a major transportation hub and border crossing used for trade between Tunisia and Libya. With the recent attacks by the Islamic State, the border was now heavily guarded on both sides. We turned on the unnamed road and headed into the dry desert terrain on the other side of the Mellahet el Brega, our destination being Misrata .
The word from the intel gathered was Richmond would be heading in that direction, if he was not already in route. Isaac leaned forward and pulled out a CD from his pack, sliding it into the slot on the radio, "I'm glad they left this in here," he grinned.
"So we can listen to the local stations and find out what's going on around us, dork," I answered. He shrugged his shoulders and twisted a knob. The music started, and I raised a brow at him, recognizing the song. Demi Lovato's Confident blasted through the speakers.
Turn that shit up Iz," Duke yelled.
We were about an hour over the Libyan border when Morgan's voice crackled through the radio. "Rover one, we've got incoming."
"Turn that off." I motioned to the CD player, "What you got Capt?" I answered Morgan.
"Looks like a scouting drone on our six," I leaned out the door trying to look behind us. "So much for an getting in unnoticed." She radioed. "There's a small village a half mile up ahead, let's see if we can make a run for it."
