Jackie held my hand as we exited the elevator heading to Amelia's room, I was a nervous wreck, we had stayed up most of the night talking and I had decided to talk to Lacey that day and try to explain my twisted jealous behavior towards her since the day we met. I've known about my sister since I was ten.
I remembered the first time my father told me about her, I was nearly bouncing off the walls that morning as he packed our bags so we could head to Columbus. I had a big sister, I was going to meet her, I was not going to be an only child growing up alone any longer.
Then the call came, my father was devastated, I had learned later that Lacey's mother had said she wanted to know nothing about her father. It broke his heart. Even if I didn't understand it then, it was the reason why I lost my father for a time as well. That year he packed his things and moved to Italy leaving my mother and me in California.
Though we never crossed paths, until last year I had always blamed her for my misery, for the comparison my father always made between the two of us, every time he called, he mentioned how well she was doing in the military. It was why I joined the Marines, I thought if I was like her somehow maybe he would love me as much as he loved her.
I never once asked or considered why she was who she became or the reason behind her own joining. When Jackie had first told me of their past, I overreacted, thinking she was a coward for running away.
She was not, she was the most loyal, caring and loving person I've come to know. Even when she had lost her memory, compassion still prevailed. She wasn't the selfish person I led myself to believe. That was evident the night of the bombing, she could have killed hundreds without thought but she didn't.
She truly was the woman I hoped to become.
"I can't wait to hold the baby," Jackie was nearly bouncing with every step. I gave her a weak smile as she squeezed my hand and stopped as if reading my mind. "I know you're nervous, but everything will work out." She assured me.
"I know," I lied.
She wrapped her arms around my neck and leaned in placing her lips against mine. "It'll be okay." She whispered into the kiss.
God, this woman, I sighed, what have I done to deserve her? I placed my forehead against hers. "I love you Jacks."
"I love you too babe." She smiled, "now, let's go see the new addition to our family," She squealed, yanking on my arm dragging me down the hall. All I could do was laugh.
"Who is that?" I questioned as I pointed to the doctor walking to Amelia's room down the end of the hall. Jackie froze beside me. Her grip tightened on my arm as her nails practicality dug through the sleeve of my jacket.
"What's wrong?" I asked pulling her towards me, her eyes never leaving the hall. "Baby look at me," I whispered so that I would not startle her. Her body shook, her terrified gaze met mine and I knew something was wrong.
"It's Brad, Thomas's brother. The one...." She didn't have to explain, I knew their history and thought I only saw an image of him once, I knew of the history he had with Amelia as well.
"Call Lacey," I tried to hand her my phone. "Babe, it'll be alright." I tried to reassure her. I wrapped my arm around her waist, walking her back around the corner towards the little waiting area by the elevators, "Wait here." All she could do was nod.
I turned my attention to the nurse sitting behind the desk near the entrance. "Call 911," I whispered. "Then get out of here."
"What's going on?" She asked but I was already heading towards the hall we had come from.
