Chapter Thirteen

Did they seriously expect me live on this? A small piece of bread and an apple? Not even something to drink! This was ridiculous! And right now, I was sure that Ashton was having a fit as well. He ate more than I did on average and I knew this wouldn't sit well with him. Things like this rarely did.
I tossed the tray and food against the door, satisfied to hear it make contact. I wasn't hungry right now anyway. Already bored, I laid down on the cot and stared up at the ceiling, listening. At first, everything was quiet. Too quiet. Then I heard a faint sound from outside my door. It sounded like a thump or something muffled.
I hopped up and pressed my ear against the door, straining to hear better. The sounds were a little louder now and I was able to figure out what they were. Doors. Someone was opening the doors one by one. Maybe they were letting us go...? Other than that, I couldn't come up with another explanation.
After listening for a while as the sounds steadily grow louder, I heard someone come to a stop in front of my door. Seconds later, the lock disengaged and it opened. There was a soldier standing there, looking down at me. He held something out and I realized they were some sort of hand restraints, similar to handcuffs.
I stepped backwards, still staring at his hands. Then I remembered. I still had my machete!
"Let's go, kid. Put your hands out," he ordered, gesturing with his own.
Call me stupid, but I shook my head. "Not until I get some answers." I slowly moved my hand to my belt, feeling the familiar weapon hidden beneath my clothing.
I heard him sigh before he reached for one of my arms. I pulled away quick enough and slipped around him, unsheathing my machete at the same time. I rushed outside of the room before turning around and grabbing the door. It was heavy. Much heavier than I had anticipated, and I struggled to move it.
The soldier came pounding towards me and knocked me to the ground, sending the weapon flying from my hands. No! Are you kidding me? I felt the wind get knocked out of me and didn't resist as he secured my hands together. He clicked the restraints closed and pulled me to my feet. By then, I had gotten my breathing back in order. But I was a bit angry.
The soldier gripped my shoulder tightly and I clenched my teeth as he lead me down the hall. He stopped by the sword and picked it up, sneering in my face, "Nice try."
He stopped at a door that was different from all the others and pushed it open. Inside, there was a bunch of equipment crowding the room. It was the same size as my room, but had an...examination chair in the middle. Large machines were set up around the chair and a man sat beside it, looking at a clipboard. He wore a white lab coat and had barely any hair. Only a thin grey patch across the top.
Great. We've been kidnapped by crazy scientists. Just great.
Hope you are still enjoying this story! Things are starting to come together!!!
