Chapter Thirty-Four

Terran

Everything was so black. It surrounded me like a warm cloak, keeping me safe and calm. It was almost as if I were floating.

However, it didn't last for long. I began to see a faint glow and it broke through the inky black, reminding me that I wasn't dead. Or at least I wasn't dead yet.

All at once, I opened my eyes and breathed in deeply. The sun was shining through the cracks in the roof and I stared up at it, confused. Hadn't it just been night? And hadn't I been outside?

I looked around the room, but no one was there. "A-" I tried my voice, but it was dry and I struggled to speak. What had happened? Where was everyone? I wet my lips and tried again. "Ashton...? Kyla?"

No answer.

I leaned up, but stopped midway when pain resonated from my chest and arms. I looked down to see a jacket covering me. I pulled the jacket off and saw what it was hiding. I had my shirt back on, but how? I had given it to Kyla. I lifted the shirt and grimaced at what was underneath. Frostbite by the looks of it, and pretty bad. How could I have been so stupid?

Carefully, I climbed to my feet and ignored the pain that steadily increased with each move I made. I glanced about the hut once more, but found nothing that gave me a clue to where they had gone.

Outside, the sun was high in the sky and beat down heavily on my back. Already, the temperature risen substantially and I began to sweat. Well, things really couldn't get any worse. At night it was freezing and during the day it would be burning hot. Just...great.

I looked around the wasteland, and spotted two figures over by a tall tree. I hoped it was Ashton and Kyla. Because if it wasn't, then I was in trouble.

I made my way over to whoever it was, but before I had taken two steps, something knocked me to the ground. I accidentally cried out when my stomach made contact with the rough earth. It scratched and burned. I flipped over to my back and looked up at what had attacked me.

Dark eyes stared back at me. And scraggly fur. It was a wolf of some sort. And it was quite large.

Oh dear.

The wolf just stared at me, unmoving. But I knew that if I moved he would attack. I held my breath, trying to figure out a solution.

The wolf opened his mouth and I caught a glimpse of his teeth. Nice rows of sharp and jagged teeth. Oh joy.

I swallowed hard and closed my eyes, waiting for the pain. Waiting for everything to disappear.

Only it didn't. The pain didn't come. I heard a yelp and some scuffling nearby. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder, shaking me.

"Terran! Terran? Wake up, man." A familiar voice urged. Ashton?

I cracked open my eyes. Ashton was leaning over me, and I saw relief flood into his eyes when I looked at him. Kyla was nearby watching us as well.

"Man, you are worse than I am," Ashton muttered, his usual smirk back on his face.

I grinned back. Maybe things would work out in the end after all.

Sorry for the late update, guys! Life has been busy lately.
