Chapter Twenty

So that's it. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that. I had thought of endless possibilities for why they wanted all of us here. This didn't seem like the worst thing in the world, but it definitely was not the best.
"How long will this thing last?" I shouted out.
"Whenever we decide to end it. Otherwise, you don't need to know anything else. Now everybody line up in three separate lines, and we'll get started," the man commanded.
There was a lot of bumping into each other while the kids got into the lines as directed. Of course, my injured arm got bumped quite a bit as I tried to get in line too. I saw that Terran and Ashton got in line a couple of kids behind of me. I peeked around all of the kids and saw that the doctors, with soldiers protecting them, were putting something small and metal behind each kid's ear. When I looked closer at the metal thing, it had thin, short wires that hung off it.
Way too soon for me, it was my turn. They stuck the metal circle behind my ear and poked the wires through the skin. It hurt a lot. I bit my lip, trying to resist the temptation to back away and quickly pull the cords out.
When they were done, they pushed me over to where the kids from my line were standing. What did these things do? I messed with the tight wire, but didn't dare to take it out. Logically, because they would just shove it back in. And honestly, I really didn't want to happen.
A soldier yelled out, "Be quiet!" and immediately, the scared kids stopped sobbing and listened up, even though there were hiccups periodically from the kids who had been sobbing.
"We will now shortly begin the examination. I will not explain what they are yet, but all you need to know is that you will be tested to your limits. You will go through those doors and wait until further order. The examination is not ready yet, but will be done within the hour."
That did not give any hints to what the examination would be like, except we should expect the worst. Nice.
The kids all filed through the doors slowly. A little too slowly. It was an adventure, and I was ready for it.
