Chapter Forty-Nine
Terran
That was too close. And what I still don't get is where did all that water come from?
Pushing down all my questions and confusion, I focused on Kyla. It was the least I could do after how I had treated her.
I helped her climb up higher so we could get a better view of where we were. She was trembling beneath my hands, and her breathing was quite heavy.
Glancing down, I swallowed nervously at the roaring and murky water flowing a ways down. It had covered everything in sight, creating a brown stew of garbage and dirt.
At least we were safe from it. And now we could rest and gather our bearings before figuring out what to do.
"Who are you?"
I looked back up from the murky water to see several boys standing before us. Ashton stepped back closer to Kyla and I, but one boy reached out before he could and grabbed his neck, holding him tightly.
"Release him!" I yelled, pushing Kyla behind me and stepping up to them.
"Answer our question and then maybe he will," another kid said evenly, showing that he was clearly in charge of the group.
"We... we are just like you. We're trapped here as well, okay?" I tried my best to keep my voice steady and even.
"But are you with the traitors?"
"Traitors?"
"Yah, the ones sent to pick us off, one by one," the boy spat out, clearly disgusted or angered.
"I don't know what you're talking about. We've been hiding out in an old building before those waves hit. We haven't really seen anyone else for a while." I did not like the sound of this. Traitors? That couldn't be good at all.
"How do I know you aren't lying? We have no proof." The boy tilted his head slightly towards the one holding Ashton. Then the boy tightened his grip on my friend. Kyla almost rushed forward in a panic, but I held her back.
"Look, just let him go and we'll leave," I tried to negotiate.
