The Happy Prince

M and R enters Thirdy's room after dinner, ready to tuck him in bed.

Good night, Mama." Thirdy says and kisses M's cheek.

"Good night, hon." M raises the blanket up to his chest. "Mama needs to ask you something if that's okay."

"Ofcourse, Mama." The little boy replies.

"I noticed this past week that whenever you come home from school, you seem very hungry. When I check your lunch box, I see that it's empty which means you must have eaten in school too. At first I thought it's just your appetite, so I added more food to your lunch and snacks but the same thing happens." M pauses to hold her son's hand.

"So, honey, Mama wants to ask if you have a problem in school. Is someone bothering you?"

RT looks at his mom quietly and thinks. "No, Mama."

R&M see their little boy's hesitation. M nods at R to prod their son for a response.

"Buddy, you know you can tell Papa and Mama anything. We're your best friends too." R smiles as he sits infront of M on the side of RT's bed.

The little boy looks at both his parents and starts telling his story.

"I swear no one's bothering me in school but I have a friend." RT starts. "Mama, do you remember Lolo Dante?"

"Yes, hon. Isn't he the old gardener in school who also chose to live there because he has no family to go home to?" M responds.

"Yes Mama. He found a new friend, a dog he calls Toto. Toto is very thin and weak when he found him, so Lolo Dante gives all his free lunch from the cafeteria to Toto."

R&M listen closely to their son's story.

"Since Mama always gives me an extra sandwich in my lunchbox. I take that and give all the rest of my food to Lolo Dante and Toto." RT explains.

R&M fall silent and look at each other with tears brimming their eyes. They smile proudly at their son for the good deed he's been doing.

M takes a deep breath. "That's very kind of you, sweetie, but you should have told us about this sooner. Papa and I were so worried about you. We were concerned that you don't get enough to eat in school. We also thought you might be bullied."

"There are no bullies in school Mama. All the kids are nice there. The sandwich was enough for me because I know you have some yummy snacks ready when I get home." RT smiles.

"But still, buddy, you have to tell us about these things. We're your parents and we're here to help you." R explains. "Thirdy, next time, you have to tell us, okay? No secrets. That's a rule in this home."

"Yes, Papa. I promise. No secrets." RT offers his pinky.

R&M hook their little fingers on it for a pinky swear.

"Tomorrow, I will prepare two lunch bags for you and Lolo Dante. We'll also pack some of Phil and Nini's food for Toto. Okay?" M says.

"Okay, Mama. Thank you. That would be awesome." RT gets up and hugs M. "You're the best Mama in the world. I love you, Mama."

M smiles and hugs RT back. "I love you too, baby boy."

"Hey, buddy, we can also take Lolo Dante and Toto to their doctors so we can make sure they're both healthy." R adds.

RT turns to his dad and says, "That's great too, Papa. I hope they're not scared of the pointies though."

"I'm sure they are as brave as you, son. They won't be scared of the pointies." R says.

"Thank you, Papa." RT says and hugs R.

"Uy! Sali. Group hug!" M says and hugs her husband and son.

"I want a hug too." Charm declares from the door and runs to join in the family hug. R lifts her with one arm to his lap to join them.

Yaya Pepe who was trailing after Charm soon enters the room with Seb.

"Mukhang may lambingan ang pamilya. May naghahanap sa'yo, Menggay." She says as she approaches M. M takes Seb in her arms.

"Thank you po. Okay na po ang mga bata. Kami na ni RJ ang bahala. Tulog ka na po. Goodnight, Ya."

"Goodnight, Nay Pe." RT and C say.

"Thank you, Ate Pe. Good night po." R adds.

"Good night din sa inyong lahat." She replies as she leaves the room.

R tightens his hug around his family. "I love you all so very much. I am so blessed to have you all."

"We love you too, Papa." RT and Charm respond.

M smiles. "I love you, kids. I love you, Papa." She says kissing the children's foreheads.

"We love you, Mama." The kids reply and they all tighten their hugs.

R smiles at M over the children's heads and whipers. "Thank you, Love. I love you more and more."

M whispers back, "I love you more and more, Love." and smiles.

"Okay, kids, time for bed." R announces.

"Mama, can you tell us a story?" RT asks.

"Ofcourse, hon. Why don't we all settle down for the story?"

R tucks RT back in bed. He takes Charm to lay on his lap and Seb in his arms.

M gets a book from the side table. R takes M's hand and kisses it lovingly. He stares admiringly at his wife, who he raises such great kids with, as she tucks her hair behind her ear and searches for the page of the story in the book.

M smiles at her husband and kids as she starts reading the story of a prince that was so generous and selfless like their Thirdy.
