taehyung's dad, kim namjoon, calls him a few minutes before the hour of new years celebration. "taehyung, are you having a good time?" he asks.
"yes, how about you?"
"i'm good," he pauses, hesitant to proceed. "you and jungkook will be alright the next couple of months, right?"
taehyung purses his lips, "yeah, yeah of course."
namjoon smiles with anxiousness, "i'm glad to hear you have faith."
"of course i do. i love jungkook even though i can't see him every single day."
"i'm surprised at how long you and him have been hiding your relationship."
taehyung shrugs, "well, yeah. having a scandal with a girl is bad in itself but having a dating scandal with a guy is worse."'
"yes, it is. well, happy new year, taehyung! i hope you're happy the next few months. take care."
"you too, dad."
taehyung clicks the 'end call' button and steps down the stairs to hoseok, jimin, yoongi, and gongju. he was searching the living room and kitchen for jeongguk but he had no luck. "where's jeongguk-ah?" he asks the small group.
"he's outside." gongju says as she points toward the door.
he nods, "thanks." taehyung quickly jogs out the door and its screen to see jeongguk sitting on the grass of the front yard. he was tearing out strands of green while he gazes at the glistening stars. "jeonggukie?" taehyung asks to get his attention.
jeongguk looks up and smiles, "hi, hyungie. i was just appreciating the starry night of the last day of 2017."
taehyung furrows his eyebrows at jeongguk's familiar words, "did you read a part of my unpublished book?"
"yeah, gongju shared it with me."
taehyung nods his head and sits next to his boyfriend. he wraps his arm around jeongguk's shoulder as he leans back, his arm supporting his upper weight. "are you going to miss 2017?"
"not really." jeongguk shrugged.
"i don't want this year to end."
"why?"
a lump in taehyung's throat begins to form as he dread the next year, "i don't know." he lies.
"that's okay," he says with optimism. "maybe you'll know once the hour ends."
"maybe."
—
the thought hooks onto taehyung. it was a parasite that consumes him, he wasn't able to enjoy the night. he couldn't cry, it's too obvious that he's hurting. he couldn't do anything to express his dread and worry.

"hyungie? are you okay?" jeongguk asks, nudging his boyfriend.
taehyung is startled and blinks his eyes, "yeah." he fakes a smile, let's celebrate the last hour of 2016." he says, taking jeongguk's hand and standing up from the couch.
jeongguk smiles, oblivious to the problem that was tearing taehyung's thoughts to pieces.
