I opened my eyes and we were back in Taron's room.
"He deserves a Guardians funeral. A big one." Ezra muttered. His voice sounded strange in the quiet room.
"He took your place knowing he would die." Thomas locked eyes with me. I nodded taking a deep breath to calm down. Andrea Burke was right. We ruined everything we touched. Things made so much sense now. She had thought she had given the real Heir to Andrea Burke but had in fact had given the Guardian away. She had raised me as the Guardian without knowing who I really was. The curse she had put on us had blurred us and connected us in ways that we shouldn't have been connected. He had assumed the identity of the Heir so he could protect me. He had weakened himself when I had died. He had severed his Guardian tie with me so I could be brought back. He was the real Guardian and I wasn't. I had ended up being the Heir. The Queen to the Immortal throne.
I guess no I truly believed it.
Why couldn't have things have been much simpler? He should have been the Heir. He should have taken the throne. I would have been happier knowing that he was going to be King. I would have given my life to him. It shouldn't have been the other way around.
Taron was staring curiously at us and we told him what we had just seen.
"That's unbelievable. He was one hell of a Guardian."
"I'm going to take the remainder of this to Dr. Nan." Thomas got up, taking the vial and left. Ezra slipped out too which left me with Taron.
"How are you holding up?" Taron traced the scar on my neck. I removed his hand from my throat.
"I'm fine." I replied, avoiding his eyes. "You should go home, Taron. You aren't fit to lead your military."
He scoffed loudly at me.
"I am more than fit. I need a few more days and I'll be up." he turned my face. "Why are you upset?"
I didn't want to tell him about Matthew going to find information on Byron.
"That's a stupid question given everything that has happened. Henri's father was killed."
"They knew what they were getting themselves into."
"That doesn't make it right, Taron." I snapped removing his hand from my face. His dark eyes didn't move from me. "I know people were going to die but it still hurts because Henri of all people don't deserve it. He has always helped me without expecting anything in return."
"Unlike me right?" Taron glowered at me. "You know I want your throne." It suddenly annoyed me that I was sitting here talking to him. "I warned you that you wouldn't like me as soon as you got to know me."
"Yes you did." I lifted my lip with dislike. "It looks like I'll die unmarried." Taron wrapped his fingers around my wrist. "It is going to take a lot for me to want to marry you, Taron." He pulled me against him with surprising strength. His other hand wrapped around me."I do love you." He searched my eyes. "You know I do."
"You just love my position more."
"I've loved you since I knew you were a Guardian, Iris."
"Now I have perks."
"Yes you do and I won't deny it. I'm not lying to you." I had the urge to slap his chest but I settled on snapping my teeth at him. Now he was going to use that excuse against me. He was right it was annoying.
He sat up without removing his arm from around me. He adjusted me on his lap but I shook my head.
"I'm perfectly fine. I only need one body part." He grasped my head tightly but I shook my head. My fingers sank into his arm so he would release me. His eyes searched mine but with a nod he released me.
