CHAPTER FIFTEEN

*********************

[Chris’s POV]

My index finger tapped on the steeling wheel. A second has passed and it felt like a day. Looking up at the blazing sun, I waited.

“Thanks for fetching me.” Her smile shadowed from the intruding ray.

Moving out of the car, I helped her with the items. There were like three boxes and a luggage. It was little compared to hers in the past.  My hands didn’t answer as they touched hers. She raised her head up as we exchanged glances. Breathing deeply, I recalled the love we once had. I didn’t expect that walk away is embraced with another walk in after six years.

“Chris, I miss you.” She fluttered her eyes. Her hand cupped my cheek. The touch was senseless. It merely felt warmth. I guessed love had faded off with time.

Smiling in return, I led her back to the front seat. Picking up, I drove her away from that messy place. My mind swept behind thinking of Rachel.

Where is she?

“Are you alright?” Grace wandered at my expression. I must have stared into space.

Nodded with compromised, I smiled at her in return. My hand reached to hers as I breathed in deeply. Patting at her hand lightly, I gave her some comfort. She won’t be staying in that messy area anymore.

[Rachel’s POV]

There was noise empowered of my both ears. I tried keeping them ignorance. It’s horrible. The twitching and gigantic construction-in-progress is making my sleep, a horrible nap. Watching the clock that had only moved an inch in the midnight 1a.m, I started regretting for accommodating here.

I dragged my luggage out between my supposedly sleep. It’s been already three days ever since I had moved in. I used up my entire annual leaves and cleared the notice period to leave Solitaire. Maybe it’s my luck that I was only going to leave after four days.

Four days was a dread.

I couldn’t stop looking at Chris like I would be gone forever at work. He was always very much occupied with work. There wasn’t much personal conversation shared. Mainly were just his schedules that we talked about.

Remembering his voice was in monotone when he saw the letter on the desk- my letter of resignation in a white envelope. He stared for a moment and replied, “I remembered you still have fifteen days of annual leave.”

Sighed at the hopeless situation, I cupped my chin while seating on the desk. Looking out at the isolated street, my heart sank. If only I would know that this was the ending, maybe things would be much different.

My curiosity grew at the time would be spend for Chris and Grace after I had moved out from that apartment. Did they have a good time?

Eyes stared in sorrow. I wiped the tears that were at the edges of my eyes. Sniffing badly at the absolute facts was just bad enough to handle.

Keeping the luggage back, I packed my working attire for tomorrow. I marked a slash on the calendar. After tomorrow, that would leave three more days. Breathing deeply for courage, I set my target on the bed. It’s time to head for a sleep. Suddenly, my mind recalled on Solitaire’s exhibition. It would be the day after and Chris would be busy heading down for a speech.

“Solitaire’s exhibition, my last accomplishment before leaving” I whispered under my breath.

It’s today. Looking up at the ceiling that was decorated with white and pink ribbons, they said white Christmas has to be romantic. Pink colour would suit the best. Walking down the aisle as I checked the entire display showcase, my eyes fluttered at the dazzlingly diamonds. They were pretty and unique, somewhat like ornaments that glittered in the darkness. Diamonds are women’s best friends.

“I am fascinated.” Sharon from the marketing department watched the whole exhibition.

Nodded in agreement, I returned her a smile.

“Heard you are leaving, when?” She exchanged glances as she landed me a question.

Swallowed in difficulty, I replied, “This Friday.”

“That’s tomorrow.” She gasped at my answer. I could figure out the astonishment drew on her face.

I smiled again with much awkward. Just then, I noticed the directors that have arrived. Chris was in his black tuxedo, tucking in the pockets as he walked along the aisle. There were six of them with their secretaries followed attentively. For Chris, I stood much apart in distance. It was obvious that things had gone wrong between us. Yes, it did and couldn’t be amend anymore.

Sighed at the hopeless situation, I hurriedly went up and followed Chris in his pace.

“Grace will be here.” He landed a sentence.

I stared up at his expression. Couldn’t find any emotion drew on his face. Yet, my heart still shattered and disappointment had ransacked my emotions. Unable to imagine that it was just a short week of apart and he had returned back to Grace.

“Yes, I am aware.” I replied without any hesitation. Disappointed it is. I couldn’t imagine myself being any better to look upset.

I flipped through my guest list as I scanned the people that walked to Chris. Once in awhile when Chris tilted his head towards, I gave the names. Sometimes people whom are too busy with entertaining issues had a bad memory of recognising people.

“It’s Hilbert, the son of Tycoon Richard.” I answered as I watch a man walked forward. He smiled and exchanged greetings while they started another boring conversation. For a moment, I felt Hilbert’s glares were directing at me. Frowning at my own ridiculous thoughts, I shook off in denial.

Its Chris today and after tomorrow, I will be off on my own. I couldn’t imagine how I would even think that Hilbert was looking at me when I am so heartbroken inside because of Chris.

“Meet Rachel.” Chris held on my waist of the sudden. I stare in surprise before I greeted Hilbert with a smile.

“I am Hilbert. My pleasure” He, with much politeness greeted me as he shook my hand while he introduced himself. Of course, I knew his name for the nature of my job.

“Rachel had been a very attentive personal assistant. A pity she was going to leave Solitaire after the exhibition.” Chris exclaimed.

I looked at him with confusion, unable to rectify his purpose for explaining about my leaving to some stranger. I closed up the confusion while my smile remained on my face...
