We went up to the door of the building. I was actually excited for the first time in a long time. I opened the door, without hesitation. The inside was actually normal. There was a huge desk, multiple computers. All of them weren't working. We looked around at the massive size of the place.. All of it seemed untouched by nature, or anything besides that. There was a staircase, and a sign next to it stating:
"First floor- Research
Second Floor- Astronaut Training
Third floor- Astronaut Living space
Fourth floor-Roof."
We looked at it for a second, then I spoke up, "We really only need to go to the first floor."
"Well I wanted to go to the roof," Naomi expressed. I didn't know why she wanted to go there, but I guess we could. It wasn't a big deal, just wondered why.
"Why?" I questioned.
"Because- I want to see what it looks like on the other side," She articulated. Fair enough. We would go to the roof after the research part. The other floors didn't really matter much to me.
We didn't find anything on any of the floors. Didn't explore the other two besides the research one. Just a bunch of papers, research topics, theories, tests, for outer space. None of the stuff indicated anything for the virus. Now we were on the staircase to the top. As we traveled up there, I saw Naomi acting weird, looking down the whole time, then, started crying.
"What's wrong?" I asked her.
"There's no hope.." She gloomily indicated. What did she mean by no hope? No hope for what?
"No hope for what?" I questioned her.
"Humanity," She informed.
"Humanity?" I asked, wondering what she meant by that.
"There's no point," She admitted."No point in what?" I probed her.
"Our race. Humanity may as well be dead. We don't even know what caused this, Oliver! There won't be a cure, there won't be any "refugee camp." People have given up, Oliver! We all die anyways, so what's the point of living?!?" She admitted, viciously. That was the sad truth.. We all die anyways.. I didn't know what our point was.. Why we are here, what any of this means.. That stuff.. I felt hopeless at times too.. But we will figure it out. I think we will."But how do you know people have given up? How do you know there isn't any camp? We can't just stop and give up! Even if there isn't one we can figure-" I told her, then was cut off.
"Figure what out? What if there isn't any camp? What if all of this is for nothing! People are dying, Oliver! PEOPLE ARE DYING HORRIBLE DEATHS FOR SURVIVAL!!!! AND ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY IS, 'WE WILL FIGURE IT OUT'? NO WE WON'T! WE WILL ALL DIE!" She snapped at me, screaming at me louder than I have ever heard her yell. She ran off ahead of me up the stairs.
"Naomi! Wait!" I ran behind her, almost falling down the steps. She slammed the door open, and instantly shut in my face.
"HELP ME!" She screamed a second later. Fuck.
