Four Letter Word

  You said you'd always love me so,
But that - and you - were both a lifetime ago...
And love is just another four letter word,
You shouldn't say it if you don't mean for it to be heard.

Thought you'd be my cure, but you were my disease --
Left me begging for mercy...please, baby, please;
In the end, you broke my heart and left me shattered...
But I only have myself to blame for thinking that I mattered.

I should have paid attention to all of those warning signs,
And made myself read between all your pretty lines;
I was just a game that you wanted to play,
But you were the only thing I didn't see in shades of gray.

You swore that I was the only one,
And maybe I never told you, but baby, you were my sun --
When you left, my world reverted to the dark...
Five years later, my heart still bears your mark.

Shame on me for thinking that I mattered,
Because thanks to you, I'm still shattered...
And you swore that you would always love me so,
But, baby, that seems like a lifetime ago.

I thought you were my cure, but you were the disease;
Left me begging for mercy -- please, baby, please...
Because love is just another four letter word,
Shouldn't say it if you don't mean it; it can't be unheard.
