A low voice with a strange accent emanated from the statue. It almost seemed familiar.
"You are Russet, are you not?" I bit my lip.
"I am." There was a period of silence, and I wondered if the connection had been broken.
"You are the one who orchestrated the... death of the Lord Jyggalag."
"I never intended for him to die," I said through clenched teeth, curling my hands into fists. "I only wanted to protect my daughter."
"And you clearly did such a fine job of that," the voice drawled. "But Regina... is no longer here." My heart dropped, and I clutched the rim of the statue. Desperation rose in my chest, and tears pricked at my eyes.
"What do you mean?!" I demanded, my voice rising to a shriek.
"Sheogorath ended her life in an attempt to find Him." I collapsed onto the ground, my heart breaking. "She is dead." I let out a screech of agony. No parent should have to learn of their child's death. It was my fault. Regina's death was my fault. "I am sure you realize your part in this, correct?"
"Of course I do!" I screamed, my chest heaving with sobs. "Son of a bitch..." I'd have preferred my own death. It hadn't hurt like this when Regina went missing. At least then, I'd had a hope of her returning to me. Now... she was dead. Gone. It hadn't hurt like this when I'd killed Brynjolf with my own two hands. It hadn't hurt like this when Nocturnal ripped my soul from my body. Nothing compared to this pain.
"Pull yourself together." The voice was tinged with anger, and I looked up incredulously.
"I just learned that my daughter killed herself, you son of a bitch... and you want me to calm down?! Who in Oblivion do you think you are?!"
"I was someone rather close to the Lady Regina as well," was the response from the statue.
"But you weren't her mother!" I hissed furiously, wanting to tear the statue apart brick by brick.
"She sacrificed much for me, and I am... grateful." My lip curled up, and I half wished I was a werewolf again just so I could run around in a rampage. It was strange, this yearning and this rage that filled my limbs.
"Who are you?!" I roared, kicking at the base of the stone statue. Seconds passed as I waited for an reply. "ANSWER ME!" The ground rumbled, and the sky filled with dark stormclouds. Immediately, rain started to pour with a ferocity I'd rarely seen, and a huge wind picked up. I had to hold onto Durnehviir in order to avoid being swept away. A massive light filled the forest, searing into my eyes to the point of pain. When it faded away, I blinked several times to try and regain my sight.
Rain pelted down onto the statue, soaking the person standing there to the bone. "Who are you?" I repeated, my voice nothing more than a hoarse whisper.
"I think you know exactly who I am."
