Tim and I walk in the door and found Curly a sleep in the arm chair. The TV was on the sports channel. Go figures. Me and Tim drag him to bed and we get our selves ready. As soon as I change into my pajamas and lay down in bed getting ready to turn my lamp off, there was a knock on my window. I open my window and look outside. They are Johnny still shivering out in the fall night.
"Come on Johnny." I wave him inside the house as he climbs up through my window.
"Sorry I just need a place to sleep." He whispers looking down at the ground as if he was embarrassed.
"You know where the stuff is. You are welcomed here. At least in my room you are. If you need anything let me know." I hug him lightly as he smiles.
"Thanks Lola." He reaches under my bed pulling out the sleeping bag and pillow. After he gets settled in, I turn my lamp off and try to sleep. I had one scary nightmare.
It was about the rumble. I was at Soda’s house and Kathy was there with me. The boys left for the rumble and were gone for a while. I was sitting on the sofa tapping my foot nervously and Kathy was biting her nails to the nub. I didn’t want to look at the clock but I glanced every second. It was nine forty. I couldn’t keep my eyes off the clock now. They should be here. I heard some people talking outside the house and figured it was our people. All of a sudden there was aloud knocking noise coming from the door.
The gang never knocks on the door. They always barge in when they feel like it. Kathy slowly got up and went to the door. Another loud bang at the door. I stood up. I was frightened. What if it’s not the gang or they got hurt at the rumble and the socs are here to get us. Kathy told me to shut up, because my teeth were chattering and shaking like my whole body was. Kathy slowly turned the knob and cracked the door but someone swung it open. It was James and the red head.
I woke up from my dream shivering cold but covered in sweat. At least I didn’t scream. That would scare the shit out of Tim and Johnny. I noticed my window was still wide open so I got up and stumbled a bit trying not to trip over Johnny but managed to close it. I laid in bed worrying about the rumble. I have to go to sleep or I won’t be much help. I can’t be scared I won’t let them get to me. The guys will make it home. The socs will leave us alone. I will be with Soda for the rest of my life. I can’t live with boundaries or in fear until the end. Everything I have been through and I am still scared? No, I am not. I fell asleep after I convinced myself this will work, but most likely it won’t.
Tim came and woke me up around noon. I look down at the ground to see the sleeping bag all folded up with a pillow on top laying in the corner. I took my time getting up then shoved those items back under the bed. I really just want to sleep, but, hey that’s not going to happen with Tim here. Even though he is a street thug he’s a morning person which I find weird. I got dressed and went down stairs. I found Tim searching for food and Curly at the dinner table asleep. I walked by him and yanked on his hair. He yelped and tried to swing at me, but I ducked.
“You know your not suppose to hit a girl.” I said in a matter-of-fact tone.
“Are we even sure you are a girl.” Curly said coldly.
“Yeah Curly I am a guy. Congrats you have two brothers. Yet I talk and dress like a girl. And if I am not why do I have these.” I pointed at my chest.
Tim walked by and hit us both in the back of the head.“Enough with that. Curly she is a girl and if you don’t believe me then you can check yourself.”
“No thanks I don’t want to be scared for life.” He grinned at me.
“This is the only good looking greaser girl you will ever find here on the east side.” I said as I stuck my tongue out at him. Angela walks in the kitchen yawning. Her makeup was smeared all over her face.
"Morning Angela." I tell her.
"Morning y'all." Her voice grumbled. I found some pop tarts on the back of our shelf and distribute one to each of us. As soon as Tim was finished he was getting ready for work.
“Hey Curly, after I get off work we need to speak with the gang about the greaser v.s Soc rumble. After that we need to head to the lot to work on no weapons.” I forgot that it is Friday. Great.
"There's a rumble going on?" Angela rubs her tired eyes.
"Yeah, and I don't want you or Lola anywhere near it. Do I make myself clear?"
"Sir, yes sir." She sarcastically says heading back up stairs and slams the door.
“Can I go see Soda today?” I asked Tim. He gave me a stern look but I know that he will say yes. After all he owes me.
“Fine, but come back home around six, ok?”
“Ok.”
I left to go see Soda. He said he was off. All those days he wasn’t there at work because of me and he gets a day off. I hold the switch in my hand as I walk down the street. I don’t want anymore beatings. I look like a rag doll trying to be a new one. The procedure went all wrong so I look like chucky. The only part of me that isn’t cut up, bruised, stitched, or even knotted up is my face. Thankfully, not my face.
