Chapter 1:The Dream

Mia

"Go on just go inside! No backsies!!" Urged Luke.

Caleigh shook her head, growing annoyed at her best friend "Luke this is wrong, somebody could get hurt!"

Jace rolled his eyes "Are you chicken girls!  Afraid to go inside a house!"

Luke began to prance around Caleigh and I like a chicken and Jace joined in as they made the most ridiculous chicken noise. It was just them, well boys in general. Especially the Monroe Twins. Weird.

I sighed turning to the girl that was practically my sister. "Caleigh I think we should do it, we can't back down on a dare!"

Caleigh stood looking between the boys and I. I could feel that she was weighing up her options inside her mind.

"OK fine!" She said giving in.

Jace and Luke wrapped an arm round us as they announced in unison "That's our girls!"

And they were right. We were their girls. Best friends since birth, spent every day together, joint at the hip. I couldn't remember a day were we hadn't spoken or seen each other. It just wasn't an option. We were the inseparable best of friends. No matter how much trouble Jace and Luke got into.

Slowly, we approached the ancient house that had been left abandoned for years. Tales surrounded the house that were passed around the town like idle gossip. However that idle gossip was enough to keep most people out. The house was sat at the top of a hill, looking down on the town of Whitby. Like an evil master looking down on his subjects. The old rotting wooden structure was surrounded by a large wire fence to keep out intruders and all you could hear was the eerie blowing of the wind. You could tell why people speculated about this house, at the top of the building it looked as if a large cloud of dark smoke surrounded the top, and I couldn't help but begin to believe the stories that people told. Rotting corpses in the living room, if you turned on a faucet you would find that thick red blood poured out. The most famous one was about the old crazy woman who previously lived there before she vanished in the 1960s. My brother told it with such fear and description that I always believed it was true. The fable tells that the old woman was beaten by her husband, so on one dark, gloomy night, she slipped him poison in his nine'o'clock whiskey, this sent him into a deep sleep. The woman dragged her unconscious husband down into the basement where she locked him up, and left him to die. Her husband banged and screamed at his wife to let him out. Slowly she tortured him to death, making sure she got every last bit of revenge upon her husband. They say that if you listen carefully in the dead of night, and the wind is blowing in the right direction, you can hear is agonizing screams of pain. His withering agony as he dies.

"You sure about this Mia?" Caleigh asked me, as she tried encouraging me to back out.

I nodded "What's the worst that could happen? I don't believe the stories anyway." That was a lie and Caleigh knew it, but I said it to ease my own conscience. "And besides, they will never let us live it down if we don't"

"That is correct" Luke smirked behind us as him and Jace stood there watching us.

We scrambled through a tight gap in the wire fencing and made our way through the now jungle like garden. Brambles scraped away at our arms and legs but the tall grass obscured us from view. We wouldn't be caught.

"Jace, give me a leg up!" I commanded.

He knelt down on the floor and I placed my foot in his hands.

"You ready Princess Mia?" He asked using the nickname he just adored calling me.

I rolled my eyes "Just do it!"

Jace lifted me up and I swung over into the bathroom and stood on the toilet seat. It was a small room with tiles falling off everywhere. I waited a couple of minutes as Caleigh climbed through. I caught her and steadied her as she dropped down on to the toilet seat as well. There was a loud crack and the toilet moved a little causing us both to scream. We jumped off the toilet and looked around the small room to see what had made the noise.

"Here look!" Caleigh said as she pointed at the bottom of the toilet seat, "It must of cracked under the weight!"

We grabbed each others hand as we tip toed out into the large hallway. Litter scattered the floor from previous break ins, and it coated the old threadbare rugs that covered the rotten wooden floor boards. The old paintings that hung on the walls seemed almost devil like, and the eyes followed our every dainty footstep. I felt a horrible chill pass over me and knew this was a bad idea, but the adrenaline of what we were doing passed through my veins.

"Come on let's go upstairs!" Caleigh suggested with a buzz of excitement in her eyes.

I shook my head "I don't know Caleigh, I think we should go back!" We had changed roles. Now i was unsure and she was determined.

Caleigh looked me straight in the eye, almost staring me down, "But Mia, think how popular we would be if people heard we'd been all the way to the top, we could show Luke and Jace that we are way braver than they thought."

I grinned. If it made people stop bullying us and would impress Jace and Luke, what was stopping us? "Well when you put it like that, it does sound fun."

So hand in hand we climbed the creaking, uneven staircase, all three stories, past locked doors, open doors, old furniture, the damp sixties wallpaper pealed of the walls, making me wonder how many times this house had bee decorated, how many people had walked up these stairs.

"Oh my gosh! Caleigh we did it!" I squeaked with excitement as we stood on the top floor of the house.

She hugged me "Yeah we did! Come on let's look in this room!" She said approaching the door in front of us.

I reached out to touch the brass door handle, it was icy cold, but slowly I turned it. Neither of us was making a noise as we pushed the door open. We stepped inside the room. Suddenly, I heard a ear piercing screech, it had come from Caleigh and I as we laid eyes on what was in front of us. But what did we see? I would tell you if I knew. It was as if all the happiness, hope, love and joy in the world was gone. And that room was filled with danger, anger, revenge, evil and darkness. I felt as if I was being brutally tortured. The pain was horrifying as it shot through my body like a bullet. Caleigh must have felt the same as both of us turned and ran screaming. The urgency to get away from that terrible feeling took over our instincts. We just ran.

Ran for our sanity.

Both of us still clung to each others hand our grips enough to cut off the blood circulation, I had never seen so much fear on my best friend's face than in this moment. We began to descend the second flight of stairs, when there was a giant, ear splitting snap. We fell, not down the stairs, but through. It seemed to go on forever, as if we were falling through an endless black void. This was it, we were only 13, and the end of our lives was upon us. We slammed against the floor and I couldn't feel anything but agony, I was paralyzed with fright.

As the old rotten structure fell on top of Caleigh and I. I heard a voice calling "Princess Amelia my daughter, you shall return. It is time" The edges of my vision began to fade, melting into darkness. Into nothing.
