Chapter 3: Doom Day
Mia
The rain poured down fast, dark low clouds blanketed the sky, deep rumbling sounds of thunder occurred every minute or so, and flashes of lightening lit up the sky.
"Bloody British weather" I muttered under my breath as I pulled on my boots and raincoat. "Tom!!!! Can you drop me off at the library please?" I called to my older brother as he jogged down the stairs. We looked very similar, blonde hair, blue eyes, tall and dimples when we smiled. Since our parents were very rarely home, Tom had always looked after me. That and our Nanna. As well as being the worlds best big brother, he was always my taxi driver.
"Sure Mia!" He groaned before adding "Can't wait till you get your own car!"
"Not anytime soon, Tom. I keep failing my tests!"
Tom shoved me as he walked out the door and laughed. "I wonder why!"
I shoved him back as we ran to his car.
As Tom pulled up in front of the library I said goodbye and ran for the door. The library is one of the largest buildings in Whitby, it's five stories high and just filled with books. I adore the old Victorian decor and the smell of books. It is also one of the few buildings that I feel completely safe in. I glanced around for the sections on Civil War, and picked up a load of books, ready to do my history paper. Extra credit over the six weeks. I know nerd alert.
It was about three hours later and my arms were piled with books and papers, from my perch on one of the balconies hidden from everyone else, I could see Chloe, the young librarian that my brother has fancied for years. The rumbling thunder and the pounding of the rain were amplified against the dome at the top of the library. As much as I loved the quiet of the library and the smell of books, I had long since finished my paper and had just sat reading my book. The rain still pounded against the roof as I made my way down the stairs that curved elegantly. When I reached the bottom floor, I rounded the corner and sure enough, some idiot walked into me. Papers scattered everywhere and I stumbled backwards landing on my bum.
"Oh, crap! I'm so sorry love! I didn't see you there, are you alright?" Asked a deep voice.
"Don't worry about it, I'm clumsy anyway." A hand extended towards me, I stared at the hand, dazed for a few seconds, and noticed he had guitarists fingers. I was still yet to meet the eyes of the person that stood before me as I took his hand, a strange tingling sensation went through me. I brushed my long blonde loosely curly hair out of my face, and met the gaze of my saviour. He had blue/green eyes that were framed by thick black eyelashes. He had quiffed dark brown hair, he had a chiseled jawline and his smile was absolutely dazzling. This he, this saviour, was non other than the boy I had been trying to avoid for the last week, this boy was Jace Monroe.
I bent down to pick up my scattered papers, and hoped to hell that he wouldn't recognize me. "Mia?" He asked.
Crap.
"Yes!" I replied. Couldn't be more socially awkward now could you Mia?
"You look amazing!" Jace complimented,
"Thanks, err you too." I smiled.
Jace went to run a hand through his hair like he always did when he got nervous "You don't remember me, do you?"
I laughed "Oh please it's not like I could forget you, Jace." Well damn...
A smile spread across his face. "I really am sorry about your papers, can I give you a lift home?" He offered generously.
I shook my head, "You don't have to do that, my brothers waiting for me outside!" And with that I turned around and began to head for the door far far away from Jace Monroe and my raging feelings for him.
"Mia!!!" Jace called after me.
I spun on my heal, "I might not have seen you for four years, but I'm still the only person that can tell when your lying!"
I sighed and hung my head in shame, "Come on!! We can talk" Jace said holding the door open for me like a true gentleman.
Just like that I followed my old best friend out of one of the places we had sat for hours. Sometimes reading to each other, novels and poetry, sometimes just in silence, enveloped in another world. Just like that I followed one of the boys that left me when I needed him most. Just like that I followed the boy that I had once had a crush on. Just like that, I found myself falling for him all over again.
