Ashley POV

Ashley, please marry me...

Ashley, please marry me...

Ashley, please marry me...

Ashley, please marry me...

I softly massaged the sides of my head as I narrowed my eyes at the laptop screen behind its glaring and irritating light. I was supposed to finish my weekly report but my mind was wandering off somewhere. I could not focus on what I was supposed to do and I could not even comprehend what the person in front of me was saying. I released a long jaded sigh.

What was she saying?

"Ashley!" Jennifer pulled me off my thoughts when she stood to shake my shoulders.

"What?" I asked confusingly.

"What's happening to you?" She clucked her tongue and rocked her head from left to right. "You aren't listening to me. You are physically present but your thoughts are not here, and you've been sighing heavily as if you own all the problems in the world since we get here in the library. What is wrong with you?"

"Ahh," I fumbled for words. "Nothing... Nothing's wrong with me— I guess I am stressed?"

She eyed me dubiously while she returned to her seat. "This has something to do with the blind date Sarah set you up to right? Is your date a psycho lunatic? What did she do? Did your date do something bad to you? Do you want me to call my cousin who is a lawyer so that we can press charges against her?"

"No!" I said agitatedly in a low voice as we were inside the library. What was happening to me? I had been irritable since I woke up.

"There is nothing that you should be worried about. My date is fine." I knew it would raise suspicion to Jennifer but it was too late for me to take off the grumpy inflection on the word 'fine'.

She scowled while looking at me skeptically. "Tell the truth, Ashley. I know for a fact that Sarah always paired you up with people with defective characters— if they aren't perverts, they are total SOBs! I don't know where Sarah get your dates— perhaps from a mental asylum? She is terribly hard-headed. I told her not to set you up on a date with random strangers but she never listens to me!"

Note: Jennifer was also speaking in a hushed tone.

I slowly closed my eyes and exhaled to calm myself— God, I'm exhausted and I think that I need to sleep.

"You don't have to worry— my date is the last one that I'd allow Sarah to set me up to."

"Oh, really?" Jennifer exclaimed sarcastically. "Knowing Sarah and knowing how soft you are to her, I pretty much think that it won't be the last until you are in a relationship. Isn't you being in a relationship Sarah's ultimate goal in life?"

I absent-mindedly looked at the wall behind Jennifer and contemplated whether to tell her about what happened last night. I released a defeated sigh and shared, "My date proposed to me yesterday night"

"Huh?" Jennifer blurted out loudly.

A library assistant motioned for us to lower down our volume. I gave her an apologizing look while Jennifer lowered her head in embarrassment.

"I heard you perfectly, right— your date proposed to you?"

"Yes," I nodded wearily.

"But isn't your date a woman?" Jennifer asked in hushed yet scandalized voice.

"Yes," I nodded again. "Does it bother you that it is a woman who ask for my hand in marriage?" I asked, observing her reaction carefully.

"I am sorry," she apologized. "Actually, no, it doesn't bother me— I don't discriminate. I'm just surprised. I mean your date was just last weekend and she already proposed to you. Isn't it a bit too fast?"
