Alison POV
I sit on the rock and look at my watch impatiently, seeing that it was 8:10. A car door shuts and I hear her voice, "hey."
"You're late," I snip and she nods, "sorry. My dad was on my back about the game yesterday." She sits down next to me and I nod, "let's just get to work. Do you see this book? Because this book is me. I am math." I hold up the trig book and she raises an eyebrow,
"What's that supposed to mean?"
I open it to the pages I know she has to get done, "it's supposed to mean that you can work your whole 'I'm Emily Fields, Mr. Big Shot, scoring my touchdowns' on somebody else, because -
"I don't even play football," she says with a chuckle and a shake of the head, making me roll my eyes.
"Whatever. The point is, at the end of the day all your bluster and BS don't mean anything to math because math don't care, and neither do I." I take my pen out and go to give her a notebook but she speaks again.
"Well, does English care? 'Cause I really suck at that, too."
My eyes wander up to hers desperately, "please don't waste my time. I'm already taking a huge chance on you because my instincts are screaming that you're full of shit..." I shake my head quickly, "let's just get started, okay?"
She nods while opening a cracker jack box and pulls out the little prize packet. I look through my plans for her and she breaks my focus when she "hmm's".
I look at her and see a plastic pink with plastic and colorful charms. She looks at me with a weird glimmer in her eyes I've never seen before. "Here. For you." She holds the bracelet out and I groan, "stop it-" "come on." She slips it on and when her finger brushes my arm I feel a weird shock in my skin and the spot she touches heats up.
I look up at her to see if she felt it too but she just smiles with the softest, kindest brown eyes, "don't say I never gave you anything."
I stare at her as something tingle. I look down at my chest, expecting a bug to be there but nothing is there. I frown and shake my head to snap out of my weird daze. "Page 13."
*
I walk towards where I see Cece, standing by a tree while the burning boat ceremony happens. "Hey," she says and we sit down on a bench while the boat lights up in flames. "Hey."
We watch as people kiss and celebrate and I see Emily with her friends, laughing it up as usual and kissing Hanna.
"Where have you been?"
"Tutoring."
She smiles, "cool. Anyone I know?"
I inhale sharply and shake my head, "no."
She nods and I watch as fireworks start going off in celebration, then I look back at Cece who looks at my wrist, "hey nice bracelet."
I look at the bracelet Emily gave me and run my fingers along the beads, "thanks," I whisper and I close my eyes, the instant picture of brown filling my vision and the first thought I have is, Emily.
Her brown eyes are...something else.
Emily POV
When I walked downstairs the next night dad joins me, "what are you eating?"
"Pizza?" I say and he shakes his head, "no. Protein shake. You need to be ready for the game."
"Dad it's just pizza," I argue but stop when we get to the kitchen. Mom's standing there, cooking dinner and I couldn't be more than happy that she's finally home.
