I still couldn't move. There was something about him that made me freeze up completely. "Hey. Hey asshole!" Kimizuki said, shaking me back to my senses. "Oh, s-sorry." I said, blinking a few times and shaking my head. "So they really do exist." Guren said, walking up to the glass. "I can't believe it." I said. I looked down at my notebook to the plain page it was opened onto.
"Yuichiro!"
I turned around and saw my friend Yoichi running up to me. "Did you see it?" He asked. "Yeah I did! It looked right at me!" I said, looking back at the tank. "It did? I was on the top floor, I could only see it for a second before someone got in front of me." He said, looking at the tank as well. We both went silent as we stared into the empty tank. "Do you think it can speak? Like Japanese?" He asked. "Well if what people have said is true, it speaks to people or creatures it chooses. Like, there has to be something special about you for it to speak to you." I said, putting my notebook back. I went around to the other viewing area on the right side of the tank to see if I could get a glimpse of it again. Nothing. "Do you see it?" He asked. "No, I don't." I said sadly.
"Yuichiro."
I looked around for whoever said my name. "Did you call for me?" I asked Guren.
"No, why?"
"You sure? Cause someone called my name." I said, still looking around. "Dude, no one called your name." Kimizuki said, looking at me weirdly. I shook my head and looked back at the tank. I peered inside and saw it again. I could barely see him, but he was watching me through a little opening in the rocks. His eyes were even brighter then before. Then, he looked down and disappeared. "Hey Guren?" I asked, still looking at the rock.
"What?"
"Is it ok if I stay here till it closes?"
"Why would you want to do that?" He asked, confused.
"I want to see if I can get more information on the mermaid."
"Yeah I guess so. Here, take this for lunch and dinner." He said, and handed me 10,000 yen. "Thanks" I said, my gaze still at the tank. "Is there something in there?" Yoichi asked. "No, but I thought I saw something. Guess not." I said and looked away. "Well, you have your phone right? Just call me when you're ready to be picked up." Guren said and walked away, Kimizuki following. "Well,I gotta go find Tomoe. Text me if you see anything!" Yoichi said and ran off.
"Bye."
I looked back at the empty tank and sighed. As time passed I looked at all the other exhibits and periodically checked in to see if he had come out. He never was every time. I sat down at the seating area of the exhibit and looked down at my phone to see if anyone had texted me. I pulled out some money to pay for food. I came back and sat in front of the tank. "You can come out now. Everyone is gone. I won't bite." I said, looking around. I sighed "Who am I kidding? You probably can't even understand me." I said, looking away.
"I can understand you."
I looked up and saw him peering around a rock. My eyes widened and I stood up. He hid behind the rock more, scared almost. "Sorry if I scared you. I'm just surprised that you can hear me!" I said. He disappeared and reappeared in another one of the openings of the rock. "I won't hurt you, I promise. Come on out." I said, sitting in front of the tank. I pulled my notebook out. I looked back up and saw his head peering around a little bit. "I've always wanted to see one of you." I said, resting my chin on the palms of my hands. "Oh really?" He said, his lips not moving. "How are you talking?" I asked, grabbing my pencil to write down what he says. "Telepathically. I can't talk underwater." He said. I wrote down the fact.
"What is your name human?"
"I-it's Yuichiro."
"Very unique name. I've never heard of a creature called such that." He said. I laughed softly and looked down at the notebook again. "You got a name?" I asked, grabbing a chicken tender from my plate.
"Mikaela."
"Isn't that a girls name?" I said, with a mouth full of chicken as I wrote his name down next to the facts. "Gender doesn't matter when it comes to names." He said in a soothing voice. "Alright. I can go with that." I said, writing it down. "How old are you?" I said, as I started sketching out his figure.
"22"
"Whoa you're 22? You look like your 16!" I said, surprised. "Mermaids don't age very fast. To me, you look 18." He said, slowly swimming up to the glass. "I'm 15, actually." I said, looking up to him, then back down to the notebook. "What are you doing human?" He asked. I looked back up at him. "Oh, I'm drawing you. Is that ok?" I asked, blushing slightly.
"Drawing me?"
"Yeah. For my notebook. I like to study ocean creatures. You're the first mermaid I've ever seen so I want to draw what you look like." I said, picking up the notebook to show him. He looked at it and played with his hair. "Is that what I really look like?" He said, looking down at himself. "Have you not seen what you look like?" I asked, standing up.
"No, I haven't."
"Oh wait! Hold on a second!"
I pulled my phone out and turn on the camera. Then I turned my phone around so he could see himself. "There you go. It's better then my drawing." I said. His eyes widened as he looked at the phone, astonished. He moved his hand and his reflection followed. "That's amazing. What is it?" He asked, looking back up at me.
"What? The phone or the reflection?"
"The silver box, a phone I guess."
"Oh, it lets me call people, play games, take pictures, look up stuff and a bunch more." I said, taking the case off so he could see it.
"Fascinating. Can you bring it here?"
"If I take it underwater it won't work anymore, sadly. Learned that the hard way." I said, laughing softly. I put it back in the case and put it in my pocket. I walked up to the glass as he swam up. My hand pressed against it, looking inside. He leveled up with me and placed his hand where mine was. "It's still hard to believe that I've seen a mermaid. And it's talking to me." I said, smiling. "I've got to be dreaming. This can't be real." I looked up at him as he looked at our hands that were separated by the 4 inch glass. "What is that like? Dreaming?" He asked. I sat down and he swam down next to me. "It's beautiful sometimes but it can also be terrifying. I always have nightmares, I never have good ones." I said, hugging my knees to my chest.
"What are they about?"
"Mostly my parents. I lost them when I was really young. But I know, they're alive out there somewhere, waiting to find me again." I said, images of that night flashing my mind. "You and I both have the similar troubled past. My parents went missing after traveling to another kingdom. One of the soldiers brought back my mothers necklace, that's why I wear it around my neck to remember her." He said, putting his hand on the charm. "How many kingdoms are there?" I asked out of curiosity. "Many. My parents were the rulers of ours. But once they disappeared, I was suppose to be king. My father's brother said otherwise. He took control of the kingdom and turned into a ruthless monster. He hated his family, me mostly because I was suppose to be ruling. I also has a peculiar interest in humans, much like you with we mermaids. He threw me out and banished me from my home. That's why I was captured by the humans. We weren't really suppose to show that we exist. It's forbidden." He said.
"So you're technically not even suppose to be talking to me?"
"Precisely."
"That's awful. So you're curious about humans?" I said. " Most mermaids are. That's why we always try to go to the surface to see what your species is like." He said. "That's why we always have mermaid sightings!" I explained.
"Correct."
"This is amazing! I've got so much more to learn." I said, grabbing my notebook and writing down everything he said.
"Hey kid."
I turned around and saw a guard standing by the tables. "We're closing up. Time to go." He said. I looked back at the tank to see that Mikaela had disappeared. "Come on kid." The guard said again. I sighed and grabbed my bag, putting my stuff away. "Bye Mikaela." I whispered and headed for the entrance.
"Goodbye Yuichiro"
I hope you enjoyed the second chapter of this!
