I woke up to the sound of my alarm as it played my favourite song. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. My phone went off to the news talking about the mermaid exhibit at the aquarium. "So it wasn't a dream?" I asked myself. I crawled out of bed and walked over to my desk to where my notebook was. "Yep. It wasn't a dream." I said, smiling. I grabbed my wallet, bag and notebook as I slipped on some sandals. "I'll be back later." I said as I went out the garage door. "Where are you going?" Kimizuki asked. "Back to the aquarium. I gotta learn more about the mermaid." I said as I got on my bike.

"Fine. I'll tell dad when he wakes up. You better be back before 7."

"Yeah, yeah I will." I said and started riding to the aquarium. Once I arrived, I immediately ran to the spot where I usually enter. I knocked on the door three times and it opened. "Back already?" Mitsuba asked, crossing her arms. "You bet." I said smiling. She snuck me in and closed the door quietly. "tell me when you're ready to go, ok?" She said and went back to work. I nodded and ran towards the exhibit. There were more people there today then there were yesterday. A lot more. I tried to push through the crowd to see if Mikaela was out. I finally made it to the front to see that he wasn't there. Not surprising.

"You're back."

I looked over at the rocks and there he was in his normal hiding spot. Apparently I was the only one who could see him. "Of course I am." I said, quietly and smiled. I think he smiled slightly as well. "Sorry folks. Looks like he's not out today." The attendant said through the microphone. Everyone awed sadly as they slowly disappeared to the other exhibits. I laughed softly and sat in front of the glass. He peered his head around the rock slightly. "They're all gone." I said. Slowly, he swam out and up to the glass. "Why are you so scared of people? You're protected by glass." I asked. "Humans are still strange and frightening to me." He said.

"But you come up to me just fine."

"You're not completely human. You're kind and gentle."

My eyes widened slightly of his words. "How am I not completely human? I'm just like them." I asked. "No you're not. You're different, special in fact. There's something about you that's not like them." He said. The fins on his tail extended in and out as he talked, as if they were breathing. I blushed slightly and looked away. "I-I don't know what to say. Thank you." I said. "You're turning red. Did I do something wrong?" He asked, tilting his head. "I-I am?" I asked, embarrassed. "It's cute almost" He said.

"Cute?"

"Yes. Many things humans do is cute."

"Well, that is true." I said, laughing. He even smiled and laughed a little. "Ugh I wish I could get closer to you to understand you. This glass is preventing it though." I said, placing my hand against it. He did the same, our fingers lining up together. "Wait, maybe I can get closer to you!" I said happily. "How is that?" He asked, confused. "Hold on. I'll be right back." I said as I got up and ran to where Mitsuba was working. "Mitsu!" I said as I ran over to her. "Sup Yuichiro." She said. "Is there a way I can go into the mermaid tank? You know, like how you have swimming with the sharks." I asked. "I mean we can try. Why do you want to swim with it? We still don't know anything about it." She said, leaving her spot and walking towards the stairs, me following. "I want to learn more about it. I've already got a lot of information." I said.

"How? That thing doesn't even come out."

"It talks to me. Telepathically."

"Telepathically? Seriously?"

"It does! Can you please try and get me in?" I asked again, trying to look as innocent as possible. "Ugh fine." She said and walked over to the edge of the tank. "Well come here and let me get your wet suit on." She said, motioning over. After that was done, we walked to the edge and I dipped my feet in. "Pull on the rope if anything happens." She said and let me in. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Then, I slowly swam down to the bottem.

"Ugh, Mikaela where are you hiding?"

"Yuichiro?" I heard him say. I turned around and saw him hiding in the rocks again. I swam to the opposite side of the rock. "Wow, you're smaller in person then behind the glass." He said, looking at me in awe. I shrugged and smiled slightly. I only had a few more seconds before I had to go to the surface again.

I lifted my finger up, signaling that I had to go. I turned around and started to leave. He grabbed my wrist and turned me around. His hands were soft and surprisingly cool. He slowly swam closer to me, studying me almost. I pointed to my throat, telling him I needed air. "Hold on." He said. His nose was finally inches from mine. Then he did something I wasn't expecting. His lips pressed against mine and I felt coldness flow through my body. My lungs refilled with air as he pulled back. "You'll be able to breath for a while." He said and swam back to where he was before. "Is he scared?" I thought, sticking my hand out. "I'm a little bit scared. I've never been this close to a human." He said. He then slowly swam back over to me. He lightly grabbed my hand and rubbed it, as if he squeezed it too hard it would break. "It's just like mine." He said to himself. His skin was just as cold as the air that entered me, like before.

"Can he read minds?"

"Only a few. You're is extremely open for me to read."

"That's amazing. Can other mermaids read minds like you?"

"No, I'm the only one. It's extremely rare for a mermaid to have powers like me, the ratio is 1,000,000,000 to 1." He said. I swam over to him and raised my hand to his tail. He flinched slightly when I touched him. "S-sorry, am I freaking you out?" I asked. "No, I'm just not use to someone touching my tail. It's sensitive almost." He said. I moved my hand up and down the scaly blue tail. "It's so beautiful. All of the different colours that are collided together. The shape is magnificent as well." I thought in awe. I moved down to the end of his tail where the fin was. When my fingers went along it, it was almost like the tail wrapped itself around my hand. I felt his hand mess with my hair as I did this.

"This is amazing."

"Do you like it?"

"I love it! I wish I had a tail that was this pretty." I said, my fingers gliding against his tail. I looked back up at the surface and sighed. "I should probably get going. Mitsuba's probably having a heart attack because of how long I've been down here." I said and started to leave. "Yuichiro wait!" He said. I turned back around as he swam over to me. "I want to say my farewells properly." He said. Then his hands rose to the sides of my face. He brought my head closer to his, then our foreheads touched. "Goodbye Yuichiro. I hope we can do this again." He said and turned away. I nodded and started to swim to the surface. "Dude! How are you alive??" Mitsuba asked as I broke the surface of the water. "He gave me air." I said, hopping out. "He gave you air?" She asked, handing me a towel. "Yeah, it felt amazing." I said, blushing and smiling. "Nut job. By the way it's almost 7. You might want to get home before Guren kills you." She said, handing me my clothes. She left, leaving me alone by the tank. I changed and walked back to the tank to grab my bag. I heard something splash and I saw Mikaela's head poking out of the water. "Oh, hey." I said, leaning over the edge. "You're still here." He said, his lips moving to his voice. "Yeah, I had to get dressed. You can talk out of water as well?" I asked. "Yes. I can also breathe out of water as well, hints why I'm talking" he said. I laughed slightly at him. "I actually have to go now before Guren kills me." I said, standing up.

"Guren?"

"Yeah, he's my adopted father. He's who takes care of me." I said, grabbing my bag. I walked back over to Mikaela and placed my hand on his head, messing up his hair. "Wow. You're hair is surprisingly dry." I said, smiling. "Yeah, I guess so." He said, smiling as well. "Well I'll see you tomorrow Mikaela." I said waving goodbye. "You're coming back tomorrow?" He asked.

"Yeah, why not? It's fun talking to you."

"Fair point. Then I guess tomorrow." He said. I smiled slightly "Bye Mikaela!" I said and started down the stairs. "Goodbye Yuichiro." Was the last thing I heard before he splashed back underwater.

I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
