Hours had passed since they left the gingerbread village.
" Hell disguised as heaven." Cindy remembered a line from her textbooks.
" I shall never even in my nightmares want to visit that place again." she said out loud.
" Agreed." Ced said dizzily, "If I walk an inch further, I shall die."
"Cindy, I think he's right. Why don't we find a nice little place to rest ?" Hazel suggested.
'Rest' did not seem like a good idea to Cindy, considering the pace they were going at. But now even her limbs refused to carry her.
" I think we should camp by the river. I do not think we should expect any uninvited guests tonight."
" Oh, well." Ced frowned as he stroked the wound on his leg.
Unpleasant memories, they were going to have a lot of them ...and Cindy was prepared.
*******
Tired as he was, Ced could not get a wink of sleep. His mind was restless from the day's events and the incessant buzzing of crickets did not help either.
He had always despised crickets, chattering away into the night, with no regard for other creatures, who had retired to their beds after a hard day's work.
He let out a groan involuntarily. This alerted Hazel, who had been keeping a watch.
"Are you still awake?" she asked, walking up to him.
"Evidently, I am." he said.
"Weren't you acting like a damsel, a few minutes ago and begging us to find a place to rest? To walk another step would be, to walk into my grave." Her voice was ugly with mockery and her olive skin shone with the light of moon and malice.
"How highly you think of me!" he said, "But perhaps the same adjective can be extended to you."
"That is very sexist of you." Hazel replied, "Go off to sleep."
"I urge you, come here and try sleeping. The crickets will treat your ears to their most melodious orchestra."
" Crickets are the reason you can't sleep? Wow. You are giving me some serious damsel goals."
"Oh Hazy Smith! Do shut up." he said, annoyed at her.
Hazel met his glance with surprise, horror and indignation, all in equal amounts. "What did you just call me ?"
" Hazy..."
" Never call me by that name, ever again." she threatened him.
He smiled. "Okay, Hazy."
" Stop!"
" Pardon me, but I could not hear you, Hazy."
"I wonder that you will still be talking, Cedron. Nobody marks you."
