Percy's POV

My nerves are frayed. I don't remember ever being this nervous. Well, that's a lie. Facing Kronos was pretty terrifying. Falling to Tartarus wasn't pleasant either. Or waking up with no memory. But I'm still nervous.

It's a beautiful night. The perfect June air that isn't sweltering hot but not chilly either. The stars are dazzling. It's perfect.

I had asked Chiron to hold everyone back after our usual rituals were over (like shoving our faces with s'mores and singing silly songs) so I could, um, do the thing. I thought about making it private but I finally decided that I wanted everyone to see. It was traditional, I guess, to be all sweet and sappy and alone so it's all romantic. But Annabeth and I weren't really sweet and sappy and we definitely weren't traditional. Plus, we grew up together at camp and spent some awesome nights around this fire with all these campers who were family, and I didn't mean it like we were related on our godly side.

Aphrodite visited me in a dream, giving me all of these "great ideas," such as a romantic walk on the beach, a romantic stroll through the woods, a romantic date to Central Park, a romantic trip to Paris, a romantic... you get the idea. But (DON'T TELL HER I SAID THIS) if Aphrodite recommended it, it equaled more incentive not to do it.

I fiddling with the little box in my pocket, paying absolutely no attention to anything around me. That was a mistake. Because right in the middle of a camp-fire song, a hydra burst through the borders, running top speed at us.
