Annabeth's POV

Percy is acting strange again. I sighed, pondering whether to ask him again if everything was okay or not. I opened my mouth, again, to ask, but before I could, a hydra appeared at the top of Halfblood Hill.

Everyone froze. What? No one thought monsters could enter camp. All at once, we all sprang into action. The hydra didn't stand a chance. It was cut down before I had even run ten steps. It really pays off to have the best fighters of the generation all in the same place.

There was a chorus of cheers, but an uneasy silence blanketed the open air, threatening to suffocate us all. How did a monster get through? I looked over at Percy. He wore an expression that pretty much summed up what I was thinking: Huh?

Finally Chiron spoke. His voice sounded restrained and his speech was short but urgent and demanding. "Head counselors, meeting in the Big House, now. Everyone else, report to your cabins and remain there until you are told otherwise." He turned around swiftly and briskly trotted away... but not before throwing Percy an apologetic glance. What was that about?

Percy sighed and looked extremely disappointed. About what? Then I saw the stress and worry set in his eyes as he took my hand and started walking towards the Big House. It made him look years older.

I wanted to throw myself on the ground and throw a fit. It wasn't fair! Percy and I had been through so much and we just wanted a fun summer. But now there was something else that a demigod needed to deal with. Probably another apocalypse with our luck.

But I knew I couldn't. Life wasn't fair. I needed to keep my head held high and be a leader. I would not give up and show weakness. I picked up my pace, practically dragging Percy behind me. He soon matched my pace, wearing a determined expression.

"No break for us, I guess."

"Of course not." His voice physically pained me. He sounded more than just agitated or worried or stressed. He sounded like his whole world came crashing down.

"Hey," I tried to reassure him. "We'll get through it. Together. It'll be over soon... probably, anyway."

He looked at me with sea green eyes that were so good at hiding the broken shards behind the bright curtains. "Together."
