After an intense staring match, he sighed. “Look, you don’t tell, we don’t hurt you- again, that is.”
I laughed, “Yeah. Really now. You know why I don’t trust people- wait, you wouldn’t even know that I don’t trust people. Anyways… Why I don’t trust people, is because they always hurt me. As you can tell.” I finished slowly, glaring at him.
He gave a cool look before he turned to Jack. “Jack, can you please just get her out of here? She’s really annoying.”
Wow. What the hell is wrong with this guy? Mood change much…. But I’m not arguing about being able to get free of this nasty place. Urgh.
Jack walked towards me with caution. I got up before he could get close enough to me to even grasp my arm, let alone help me up. We didn’t exchange any words at all, he just grunted while leading me towards the door.
As we headed down a hall, the youngest boy was standing, watching us. He put his hand out, causing Jack to halt. “I’ll take her.”
“Joe told me to, Rich.”
“I really don’t care what Joe said. I’m going to take her, Jack.” Authority leaked into his voice, as Jack nodded before turning and stalking away.
I hesitated before facing the one they called ‘Rich’. “Um…can I, uh, please get out…. Of here.. ASAP?”
He gave me a small smile. “Yeah, but can I ask you something?”
“Um… Yes? Do I have a choice?”
“Yes you do. Anyways, why were you out at that time of night?”
“I’m always out around that time. Somewhere, at least. It wasn’t even that late, was it?”
“Guess not. But I’m sorry about how they all acted. I tried to stop them, trust me, I did- but they just didn’t listen…”
“What happens, happens. I just want to get out of here, get checked out, and go home. Please, make that happen.”
“Alright, but I apologize for how they treated you.”
I nodded, but walked down the hall, while Rich started to lead me down to the exit. “So, what’s your name? Mine’s Richard, but everybody calls me Rich.”
“I’m Cara. People call me CC, Care, Car-Car, and people close to me call me Care-Bear.”
“Cool, cool.”
The sound of our footsteps echoed down the corridor and silence filled the gaping hole between us. We aren’t walking too fast, but not too slow, either. It’s a nice pace, I guess. I coughed, clearing my throat. Richard glanced over before he walked into a pole.
I started laughing. His face was priceless! Shock and awe seemed to be a stuck look. He looked at me, then back at the pole, then back at me. “I can-can’t believe you just ran into that pole! Ha ha ha!” I managed to spit out between laughs.
“I didn’t see it! I swear it wasn’t there before!”
I started laughing harder. He didn’t see it?! It’s right there! It’s a bright color! How can you miss it?!
A new fit of giggles started to leave me as he got up, and started to inspect the pole, as if it was some intruder. He started circling it, then tapped on it. I don’t know what he was doing, but I sure know it hurts to breath.
I started to take deep breaths, doubling over from all the laughter. “So, you seriously don’t think it was there?”
He stared at me with a dead serous look. “I’m positive.”
