Nat guided me to the interrogation room where they were keeping Loki. She held my hand the whole time as we walked up to the one-way glass.
Maria was doing the questioning and arrived at the same time that we did.
"Loki, do you understand why you are being questioned here today?"
"Yes."
"Do you accept the punishment of returning to Asgard and being convicted as they see fit?"
He clenched his jaw.
"What?" I turned to Nat. Nobody told me they were going to send him back to Asgard.
"It's just so he can serve a proper punishment." She tried to assure me.
"No! You told me you were just going to help him! Not chain him up like this and send him back to a place he hates!"
"Soph-"
"Is there nobody I can trust?"
"I didn't lie-"
"You just avoided telling the whole truth so I would help you make sure Loki stayed here. Don't think I didn't figure that out the second you introduced me to Maria as 'the girl who made Loki surrender'. At least Loki didn't use me for his own advantage." I shook my head at her as I ran in the opposite direction.
"Sophie!" I heard her call, but I didn't turn back.
First, Loki lies to me and allows me to believe that he doesn't kill or torture people anymore. Then, Nat lies to me and tells me they're just going to help Loki.
Of course, I noticed that she had introduced me as 'the girl who made Loki surrender'. I was too distracted by the fact that Loki had surrendered because of me, but I remembered it.
I knew they were welcoming me way too quickly. I thought everyone was just being nice upon first introductions because they heard about Loki lying to me.
My mind raced as I took a breather and sat down on the floor.
I needed to figure out a plan. I had to find somebody I could trust.
I thought of somebody I knew that would never lie or avoid telling me the truth. I may not have known everyone on here long but most of their personalities were common knowledge in New York, and I knew Thor through Loki.
Finally, I figured out the one person I could trust. Someone who would never lie to me because they were just as confused as I was.
I stood up and took a deep breath.
I headed back down the hall, looking for him, and avoiding anybody else that tried to talk to me.
Eventually, I found him. I tapped his shoulder and beckoned him to abandon his current conversation.
"I need to talk to you. It's important."
He nodded and waved goodbye to one of the agents he was talking to. He walked with me down the hall until we found a place with no cameras or mics, and where nobody could overhear us.
"I just didn't know who else to turn to. It feels like everyone's been lying to me and I knew you wouldn't. I just need somebody I can trust."
Steve nodded. "I know the feeling. Taking this all in. It can be daunting."
"That's making light of it," I scoffed.
"It's true."
I sighed and raked my fingers through my hair. "I just don't know what else to do. At first, Loki seemed like the best idea. Then, I figured out he was killing and torturing people. After him, Nat and the agents seemed like the best idea, until, I discovered they lied to me and used me for Loki."
"Well, why did Loki originally seem like a good idea? You must've known he killed and tortured beforehand."
"He started out like that and my original idea was that he had a reason for doing this, and he did. He didn't know anything else because he isn't really treated with respect or kindness on Asgard. I thought if I got him to stop doing it and treated him with that kindness he had been lacking that he would stop altogether."
"Did you really think that? You don't seem like the type of person that thinks she can get a guy to change for her."
"Honestly? I don't know if that's what I was thinking, or if I was thinking it through at all. All I know is that he was a cute guy, he took me away from a home that I hated, and promised to keep me safe."
"That's where you start. Why did you trust him when he took you away from your home? Even if you didn't like the home."
I thought for a moment. "I asked him if he was going to kill me and he said he wouldn't let me die, and then he helped me when I was having nightmares about my mom."
"Okay, it sounds like you started to trust him despite the killing. When you found out he was doing it again you hated it, but you didn't base your opinion of him on whether or not he was killing people."
"But I don't know if I can forgive him for killing."
"You don't have to, but him not killing is not why you started trusting him. The fact that he didn't kill you and protected you is why you started trusting him."
I thought about what he was saying. I did still feel like I trusted Loki, I just didn't know if I could forgive him.
"I need an honest opinion here, Steve. What would you think if I got back together with him?"
He sighed. "I don't know. I wouldn't hate you for it if that's what you're asking, and I wouldn't think any less of you. Who knows? Maybe you can help him. You can't change everything about him, but you might be able to help him feel less lonely. It's loneliness that can drive a man to madness, so if you end his loneliness and show him that you're with him no matter what, he might start to become better."
I smiled. "I needed this. I need to be able to talk to someone I can trust and get honest opinions and help. Thank you." I hugged him tightly.
"Anytime, Soph." He grinned.
"Oh, one last thing." I turned back to Steve. "Can you lead me to Loki's cage?"
