I groaned and rested my head on the desk.
"I can't believe we've had two customers all day! We've been open since 6 am!" My boss, Mr. Devito shouted.
"Yes, we know. We're the ones who opened up the shop while you were out screwing your intern, behind your wife's back!" My best friend, Avery, snapped.
"Watch that mouth, Avery. I can have your job at the flip of a dime."
"Yeah, but you wouldn't fire me because you only have two girls willing to work for you, and I'm one of them!" She yelled.
"Avery." I moaned, exhausted.
"Shut it, Soph, I'm trying to make a point here."
I rolled my eyes, the two of them had the same argument every Saturday and twice on Sunday. It always ended the same way, Mr. Devito would lie and say he'll stop screwing his intern and Avery would agree to not complain about the only job either of us could get.
Soon enough, my prediction came true and Avery pulled up a chair next to me while Mr. Devito headed up to his office.
"Why do you fight him? It always ends the same way." I told her and she sighed.
"I fight him in the hopes that it won't end the same way. How's life back home?"
"Ugh. Don't remind me. Ever since she passed it's like my dad died with her. He won't go to work, he barely leaves the house, and he asks me if I'm doing okay every five minutes and every time he asks he looks like he's about to burst into tears at any given second."
"Well, she was his wife. They were high school sweethearts. You can't exactly blame him for being sad that his wife is dead." She reminded me.
"I know, but I can blame him for not attempting to get on with his life. It's suffocating every second I'm in that house." I sighed.
"Do you want to stay over at my place again?" She asked.
"Could I?" I looked at her like a small child that was offered a trip to the candy store.
She laughed and shoved me playfully. "Stop looking at me like that. Of course, you can. Text your dad and I'll pretend that I'm working so Devito doesn't get on both of our asses."
I smiled. "Thanks, Avery."
"No problemo."
I texted my dad that I was going to sleep over at Avery's, so he shouldn't wait up. I glanced up and saw Avery turning the radio up with a sly smirk on her face.
I started laughing as she danced around the store and pulled a mannequin off its display to be her dancing partner.
"You're golden!" I shouted at her over the music.
"I know right?!" She exclaimed. "What do you think?! Next America's Got Talent winner?"
I laughed. "Definitely!"
Mr. Devito started walking down the steps from his office and frowned as Avery continued to dance like nobody was watching. He crossed his arms and she grinned wildly at him.
"You know you love it!" She giggled.
He rolled his eyes with a small smile on his face as he walked over to me.
"I was going to say, we might as well close up shop early considering nobody has been here for three hours and it's getting late." He told me.
I chuckled as I watched Avery climb atop the display that the mannequin she was dancing with was once on. "Uh, yeah, sure. Once the song ends I'll drag her out."
