Chapter 8

Nicki
N-"Hey mom. Does anyone know that Kellise is here beside me?"
C- "Caiah and I do but I don't think her parents do"
N-"Do you have any idea what happened to her?"
C- "No, I don't but all I know is that her mother has been on drugs for this past year."
N- "Then why has Jelani been letting her stay with her mother?"
C- "I didn't find out until yesterday when I was on the phone with him and I asked how she was doing."
N- "Well, I'll talk to Kel when she's done eating her breakfast."
C- "Okay, I gotta go Nika. I love you."
N-"Love you too." I said and hung up and sighed.
I went into the kitchen and looked at Kellise just thinking about what she probably went through with her mom.
"Kay go find Cammy." I said and she got off Kellise's lap and crawled upstairs and I giggled. Then I sat down in the chair next to Kellise and she looked at me and smiled.
"What?" She asked and when she saw my facial expression and her smile faded.
"Does your mother do drugs?" I asked and she picked at her food with her fork.
"Yeah" she whispered looking down at her food.
"Did she ever do anything to hurt you?" I asked and she stood up.
"I lost my appetite." She said throwing her leftovers in the trash and putting her plate and fork in the sink.
"Honey I just-" she ran upstairs as I was talking. I sat down and palmed my forehead. She just needs sometime alone so I'll just wait about twenty minutes to talk to her.

I walked upstairs and checked on Kaylin and Cameron. They were both sleeping in Cameron's bed. I smiled and turned the tv off then kissed both of there foreheads. When I walked in Kellise was laying down under the covers. I couldn't tell if she was sleep or not because she was facing the other way.
"Kel, you up?" I asked and she turned around.
"You alright?" I asked and nodded.
"Yes I am." She said and I sighed and sat on the side of her bed.
"We need to talk you know." I said and she nodded.
"Did your mother ever beat you?" I asked and she slowly nodded.
"Why didn't your father take you from her? Do you know why?" I said and she nodded.
"He didn't want me to tell anyone what he did to me. That's why I hardly ever seen you or grandma." She said as I watch tears drip from her chin. I held her and rubbed her back.
"What did he do to you?" I asked and kissed her forehead.
"He...he r-raped me." She said and I looked down trying to take everything in.
"Your father?" I whispered and she nodded.
"I tried to get him to stop but it never worked." She said and I sighed and rocked her.
"Well, what I think is best to do is uh... get full custody of you. If you would like that." I said and she nodded.
"I can't go back to neither one of them. I want to feel safe." She said and I nodded.
"You are safe with me baby girl. You won't have to worry about anything okay?" She laid her head on my chest and closed her eyes.
"Okay." She said.
"Go to sleep honey. You need some rest." I said and she nodded and I rubbed her back. Twenty minutes later she fell asleep and I was still with her because I started drifting off too until I heard little whines. I looked by the bed and Kaylin was trying to get up. I gently took my arm from around Kellise and got out of the bed.
"Come with mommy." I said holding my hand out and she reached up to me, wanting to be picked up. I walked out the room and she followed me whining.
"Use your words." I told her tapping my lips with my pointer finger.
"Up mama." She said and I picked her up.
"I hungwy" she said and I nodded.
"Okay baby, I'll get you a snack." I said and I looked in the fridge and got out some strawberries.
"You like strawberries baby?" I asked and she clapped her hands. I cleaned them off and cut them in half. I gave her a little plastic bowl and she waddled over to the couch and tried to get up.
"Mama! Mama! Mama!" She yelled and I walked over there.
"Use your inside voice. I'm right here." I said sitting down then sitting her in my lap. I turned on Mickey Mouse and she sat and watched quietly. I went on my phone for about thirty minutes until I realized that she was done eating. I handed her the pacifier and got up sitting her on the couch.
"Mommy will be back." I said and she paid no attention. I laughed then headed upstairs to check in Cameron but she wasn't in her room. I went in Kellise's room and they were sitting on the bed painting each other's nails.
"Well look who's up. Look at my girls!" I spazzed and they both laughed and Cameron started blowing on her nails to dry them.
"Oh my gosh Nicki. Your daughter is amazing, she is so sweet." Kellise said and I smiled.
"So do you guys wanna go out for icecream? Or I'll just bring you something back." I asked.
"You know what never mind. Cause we need to go to Verizon." I said and they nodded.
"Get ready while I go put your sisters shoes on. We'll be in the car." I said and they started to get up. I went to Kaylin's room and got her shoes. I went downstairs and put on Kaylin's little shoes. I picked her up and turned off the tv. I went to my car and put her in her car seat, then going to the front seat I texted Cameron telling her we were outside. The girls came out the house a couple minutes later laughing about something.
"Alright were getting ice cream first then going to Verizon to get Kellise's new phone." I said as they got in the car.
"Can I get the seven plus?" She asked and I nodded.
"Anything you want baby girl." I said and she smiled. Now I basically have three daughters and I don't know if I was truly ready.
