Chapter Eight: Maple

Brody seemed dangerous. He seemed really mad. More than angry. I really thought he was going to find them and kill them. I was scared for them. But then I remembered how awful they were and realized that I was kind of ok with him hurting them. Just not killing them. They were still members of my democracy.

That's right. Werefoxes have a democracy. We're not packs, so we cant have an alpha. So, that's why we have a leader. And assistant leader. We don't have the other stuff, 'cause we only have about 50 people in each group. Whereas, in the United States we have a few million. So there's no reason to have a treasurer or senate. No one really knows what to call our groups so we just call them werefoxes. We don't have different names for our packs or anything. Its not like the RedNight pack or something. We're categorized by state. In each state there is only one group. So, my group is the Virginia foxes. We have some allies  but some enemies.

For example, werefoxes from America hate werefoxes from Germany. After world war II we didn't see any reason to try being friends with them again. They were the ones who told Hitler to do all the things that led to world war II. And they killed innocent werefoxes from their own group! We thought it was be bad to befriend them. We knew it would lead to betrayal.

But, back to the current time. Brody was a member of the Virginia werefoxes now, so, if he killed Julie and Brandon then we would both be kicked out of our group and we would be like rouges. Only foxes. And we would act like normal foxes. We wouldn't be traveling together. But I would get kicked out, and so would Delbert, because I made Brody a werefox, and Delbert is my brother.

Suddenly I smelled something. It was people. Not just any people though. It was my best, and only, friends. Nikki and LaCie. I smelled someone else to but I just guessed that it was Brody's friend or something. I ran outside and Brody followed. I got outside and, sure enough, Nikki and LaCie were standing there with Delbert. There was a brown haired boy but I didn't recognize him.

"Who's that?" I asked, pointing to the boy.

"That's my friend, Walter." Brody said. "Who's that?" Brody pointed to LaCie and Nikki.

"My friends. LaCie," I pointed to LaCie. She had brown hair and grey eyes. "And Nikki." I pointed to Nikki. She had brownish-blonde hair and green eyes. They were both pretty and fascinating to look at. I was blonde haired and blue eyed. I looked just like all the popular, brainless, girls at my old school. They all dyed their hair and wore colored contacts though. I never got that. If you dye your hair a natural color then you're going against what you're supposed to look like.

"Didn't you go missing, like, twice?" Walter asked me.

"Yeah. I'm surprised you actually remember both. Nikki and LaCie don't. They only remember once. But, yeah. When I was five and then I tried to come back but it didn't work. The new identity worked, I just couldn't stay all year. I'm assuming that Delbert already told you about everything?"

"Yeah. Why didn't you tell us?" LaCie asked.

"I'm sorry. I wasn't allowed to. I wanted to, but I couldn't."

"Well, we know now. And that's the important part. Right?" Nikki said. It was more like a statement than a question.

"Right." I said. LaCie nodded.

"So, Delbert, what was going through your mind when you did this?" I gestured to our friends, angrily. I was happy that knew my secret and shared it with me, but I was mad because they all have families that they cant just run away from.

"Can I talk to you inside?"

"Fine." We went into the living room. "What?"

"I'm sorry. I thought this is what you wanted?"
