Chapter Twelve: Brody
"What do you mean she ran away?" I yelled at Delbert. Delbert let Maple run away? How could he let her? Why would he let her?
"Hold on." He pulled out his phone. He was texting, when his sister, his only family, was missing? How stupid was he? "I mean she is missing. Not able to be found. Synonyms include: lost, absent, gone, astray, AWOL, lacking." He looked up to see me with clenched fists.
He chooses now to be like her? To be sarcastic? "Where is she?" I asked, through gritted teeth.
"How am I supposed to know?"
"Oh, I don't know? Werefoxes senses are better than normal people's senses?" I said.
"Has no difference. She ran too far too fast. Now only her mate can find her."
"Mate?"
"Sorry. True love." He mumbled.
Faster than you can say werefox I was running-scratch that. Sprinting out the door. I had no idea where I was going. My legs just carried me for an hour. Finally, I reached a meadow. I just stopped. The meadow was beautiful, but that didn't matter. I didn't know where Maple was. In the middle of the meadow there was an old weeping willow.
I had just run for an hour, and I wasn't out of shape, but I wasn't in shape. Well, I'm making no sense. I decided to sit against the willow, in the shade. "What am I going to do?" I asked myself, sitting down. A reddish dog came around the trunk of the tree and looked at me. I held out my hand, to show that I wouldn't hurt him.
He just growled at me. I frowned. Does he sense that I'm a fox? I thought. Suddenly, he stopped. He just stared at me. "What's wrong?" I hissed. The dog started to whimper. "No, I'm sorry. It's-it's just-my true love ran away. Her brother is being...being...I don't know. I'm trying to think of the right word. Nonsensical! He thinks he knows what's best for her! He doesn't though! She needs her happy memories! Not people she barely knows!" I practically shouted.
Just then, the was a snap. A branch fell out of the tree and Maple fell down and landed on her back, hugging the tree branch. I just stared at her.
"Uhh...hi!" She laughed.
I stared at her.
"What?" She asked.
I wasn't mad or anything-
"Please talk to me." She said, sitting up.
I just needed to think. I was actually really happy that-
"Brody-" I cut her off, with a hug. At first she was really tense, but then she relaxed.
"I'm so happy you're okay!" I said.
"Can't...breathe..." she said. Apparently I was hugging her tightly.
"Oh...sorry." I apologized, lightly blushing. I got over excited sometimes. Its not my fault, I was happy to see my true love!
"So, why are you here? You know I'm not coming back, unless Delbert said that I can stay in my house."
"First, I care about your safety, and wanted to make sure you were ok. Second, what do you mean 'your' house?"
"My parents left it to me, when they died."
"Oh. Well, maybe you can compromise?"
"How?"
"Maybe you can keep this dog if you live there?" She had been petting the dog that growled at me.
"Do you think he would agree to that?"
"You know him better than me! But, yes. Only because, you're all he has left. And he's all you have left."
"I have you, now."
"Awe. How cliché." I said and we both started laughing. We were anything but cliché.
We talked for a while and got to know each other better. It was perfect. When we were done, we walked back through the woods. It took two hours and we talked the whole time. I never could've asked for anything better.
