Chapter Nineteen: Brody
We all sat up slowly. They were tired, and I was just trying not to be obvious. "What was that?" Delbert asked, yawning.
"Oh, just a raccoon. Don't worry." She said. Delbert knew she was lying, I guess was too tired to question her any further, so he and Sapphire went back to sleep.
"Let's be honest, that was a person." I said, quietly; once Delbert and Sapphire were sleeping.
"Let's be honest, you were awake." Maple retorted.
"Yeah. I know. I figured you would be able to guess from the fact that I knew."
"No, I knew because I could hear that your breathing didn't slow down. Everyone knows that you breathing slows down when you're asleep."
"Right." I said quietly. "Who was it? That just tried talking to you?"
"Just some girl." She lied.
"Maple, I heard the voice. That was not a girl, and I recognized the voice."
"Um-I-it-" she stuttered, "It was-Uh-um-I cant tell you-I mean-its not that I don't trust you. It's just that he would kill me. He-not literally-I just...you know what I'm trying to say."
"So it was Jason?" I asked. She simply nodded. "It's okay. I'll kill him. Metaphorically, of course. I don't want to hurt you, by killing one of your oldest friends." She smiled slightly.
"Thanks." She said, quietly.
She went to sleep while I kept watch. Nothing eventful happened for a couple days.

I woke up to cold air and white surrounding us. Puffy white stuff. Snow. I woke Maple up and she slowly sat up.
"What?" She asked grumpily. We had been traveling for a few days. Maybe more. I hadn't kept track. "Snow?" She asked.
"Do you know what the date is?" I asked. She shook her head.
"Hold on." She checked all of her pockets and pulled out a phone, "According to my phone, December 25th." She said simply. Suddenly, just looked at her phone again, realizing what she said. "It's Christmas? Why has no one kept track of this?" She said, almost yelling.
"I don't know, maybe the fact that we haven't yet found safety and we're running from a couple hundred crazy people?" I suggested. She gave me a 'I'm not stupid.' Look. Ah, rhetorical questions; never know when its rhetorical or real. "Merry Christmas." I said, changing the topic.
"Merry Christmas, idiot.
"Well, you just ruined my Christmas." I said, with a joking tone. She just rolled her eyes and woke up Delbert. Then I realized something. We'd been traveling for days and we were in the middle of nowhere. "How is your phone charged and do you have a signal?" I asked her.
"I know wizards and yes."
"Well, you might want to turn it off. People could track your phone and find us."
"You haven't noticed?" I gave her a confused look. She walked over and whispered, "They've been following us for two days." I stared at her in complete shock. Two days? How was she the only one that noticed. Maybe it was because her fur was different from any other foxes in Virginia?
Later, we all had a snowball fight. And by all I mean all. Every single one of us. A couple hundred werefoxes having a snowball fight. It was quite fun, surprisingly. You would think that fighting, using balls of fluff, with complete strangers, that are fantasy creatures, would be awful and terrifying. But no, it was fun.
At least, until Maple stopped. She just stood still.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"They're attacking. Now." She whispered.
"Who?" I asked. But she didn't have time to answer.
My mom ran up behind her and gagged her. My dad did the same to me.

Fantasy..."you're all he has left. And he's all you have left." "I have you, now." "Awe. How cliché." We both started laughing. It was like an unspoken agreement, to be cliché. Probably because there was nothing cliché about us. Two werefoxes. They stare a...
