Chapter Two: Maple

I kept walking through the woods until I came to a small house. I sighed and, under my breath, said "finally." I walked in and found my brother, Delbert, at the kitchen table, drinking hot chocolate.

"Finally, you're here...and human." He said, his brown eyes bright, with excitement. He was an amazing fox. His brown eyes looked great with orangeish fur.

"What do you mean "here and human"?" I asked. What else happened when I turned into a fox?

"You came here. Yesterday, actually. Probably even before that. I guess we'll never know."

"Oh. Where are mom and dad? Haven't they changed back yet?"

he looked down. Tears forming in his eyes. I knew exactly what he was going to say. I could read him like a book. I felt the tears coming, so I used the courage I had and asked, "How?"

"Hunting accident." He said, with a trembling voice.

I ran outside, not knowing where I was going. I screamed at the top of my lungs and to my favorite tree. The maple tree, holding up my tree house.

I climbed the ladder and opened the trap door to get in. My dad and I had built it two years ago when I was 13. I had decorated it with a mattress, Christmas tree lights, a mini fridge, and a microwave. I knew that one day I would have to sleep in my tree house.

I walked over to the mattress. There was a pile of cleanly folded sheets. On top of that, there was a note. It was in my dad's handwriting. WE LOVE YOU AND DELBERT. ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT.

I sat down and cried for half an hour. When I was don't, I got up and made the bed. It moved slightly and I saw something. I moved it fully out of the way and saw a painting my mom and I had made. A bottomless pit. Don't cry. It's okay. They're okay. I told myself.

I fell asleep and dreamt about the boy I had just met, Brody.
