Chapter Five: Brody

We walked through the town, both of us bleeding. We didn't even realize that we were bleeding, calmly walking through the small town that she didn't exist in.

"Can I ask a personal question?" Maple asked. I nodded. "Do you still miss your mom? You don't have to answer." She said, hurriedly.

"Yes. Its been nine years, but I still miss her and think about her every day. I just don't cry anymore. I used to. But I was seven. Why?"

"My parents were killed last spring. I really miss them. But I barely ever saw them. Only in summer in winter." People turned their heads when she said that her parents were killed so I elbowed her.

"Hunting accident?" they weren't uncommon. She nodded.

"Yeah."

We soon reached the hospital and they took us in separate rooms immediately. They cleaned my hand and wrapped it in gauze.

"So, what happened?" The nurse asked.

"A fox bit my hand. " I simply answered.

"Oh. Well your girlfriend-"

"She's not my girlfriend. We're just friends. Barely friends, I should say."

"Well, she's in room 206."

"Thanks you."

I walked to room 206 and found Maple asleep on the bed. A nurse walked in and tapped me on the shoulder.

"Excuse me sir," The woman said, "I know you came to see if your girlfriend-"

"She's not my girlfriend. We're just friends." What was with these people, thinking that Maple was my girlfriend?

"Right. Well, anyways, I know you care about her, but I'm afraid you'll have to leave. She need her rest." The nurse paused, and when I didn't leave asked a question. "Where are her parents?"

"They were killed last spring. Hunting accident."

"Oh...don't I recognize her? Didn't she go missing a few years ago? Ten years ago? Her family disappeared a few years before her?"

I looked at her. For a millisecond I saw a five year old girl with short blond hair and Maple's eyes. I turned to the nurse and said, "Maybe. I'm not really sure."

"How would you not know? Aren't you her friend?"

"Well, yes. But, I only met her five days ago. She said that she moved here and didn't want to talk about her childhood so I didn't ask."

"Oh. Didn't she have a bother or two?"

"Yes, if this is the right girl."

"Is there of way of contacting them?"

"I'm sure there is. I just don't know it."

"Alright. Fine. Only because she has no one else, you can stay tonight. But I want you to find her brother tomorrow."

"Thank you."

The nurse left, and Maple opened her eyes.
