"What time do we need to be at your mum's?" I ask Lauren once we wake up. Today is the 31st of December and to say that I am excited for the new year is an understatement. So much shit has happened this past year and I can't wait to start with a blank page again.
"She didn't give a specific time but we're going over for dinner so maybe we should leave at 5?" Lauren says and I nod in approval.
Her mum had invited us over to spend the night there so they can go into the new year as a family. Me being Lauren's 2 year long girlfriend, I am invited to join as well."OK. I'll be ready then. I'm going to sleep for a bit longer." I say as Lauren get's up out of the bed. Everyone always thinks that Lauren sleeps a lot but they have obviously not met me.
Lauren nods and presses a kiss to my forehead before heading out of the bedroom. The rest of the time fly's by and soon we're seated in Lauren's car, driving to her parent's house. I am excited to spend tonight with her family since we all get along well but Lauren seems a little nervous.
"Are you okay, babe? You look a little off?" I say, hoping she will confide in me. She nods and sends me a nervous smile, probably hoping that I'll just let it go. I nod and take her free hand in mine, braiding our fingers together. During the hour long drive I spend most of the time wondering what has her so nervous. Did she do something and not tell me about it?
Does she want to break up?
Is she going to propose?
I couldn't decide on one to settle my mind but soon enough we are parking in the driveway. We're not even out of the car yet but her family is already running into the cold winter air to greet us. We spend about fifteen minutes outside, greeting everyone and exchanging a few words before Lauren's mother ushers us inside.
"So what did the lovely couple do today?" her mother asks as she stirs numerous cups of coffee. "I was very productive where as she just slept in most of the day." Lauren says with a chuckle as she bumps my hip with her's. "Both of you sleep a lot, yet you still manage to have time for each other and everything." her mother says and I laugh.
"I think it's also one of the reasons we get on so well. We're both asleep most of the time." I say and everyone laughs.
I feel like I fit in well with his family.
"Well, since we're on the topic of our relationship now, mind answering me a quick question?" Lauren nervously asks and I nod, unsure of what to do.
"Ask away." I say and she steps forward to stand in front of me, looking directly into my eyes.
"Marry me? I spent the past two years with you as my girlfriend and I would love to start a new one with you as my fiancé." She says and my eyes go wide. I was right! I knew she was going to propose! But I still didn't see my tears coming.
"Of course!" I mumble and jump into her arms. "Congratulations you two. I'll give you a moment alone." Her mother says, smiling as she steps outside of the kitchen. "I love you so much!" I say and Lauren presses her lips to mine. "Happy new year!" we hear her sister and brother yell once we break away. "It's not even midnight yet?" Lauren confusedly say and I giggle.
"Doesn't matter. I wanted to say it." Her younger sister replies.
I must say, it's going to be a lovely new year.
