It was the end of the school day, and I couldn't believe how fast it had gone. As I made my way towards the school gate, butterflies began to erupt in my stomach. How was I meant to face Connor after what he had done to me?
Taking a deep breath, I walked out of the school yards and into the streets. I couldn't find Connor anywhere, no matter how hard I looked through the crowds of school children waiting to be picked up.
I searched for the boy with the midnight black hair, but he couldn't be found. Has he stood me up? I asked myself. But in all honesty, it would not surprise me if he has.
I have not stood you up, a voice sounded in my head. I'm down at the back gate. Meet me there as soon as you can.
I rolled my eyes and started to walk towards the back gate. As I arrived, I felt the butterflies increase. Looking at Connor as he faced me, I saw that his face was blank and even more white than it usually is.
"You look like shit," I mentioned to him, a small smile coming to my face.
Connor smiled back, but it faltered straightaway. "I feel it, too," he told me, his fingers playing with each other. If I didn't know any better, I would say that Connor was nervous.
I smiled to myself, then it dropped as I thought about what those hands had done to me. "What did you need to talk about?" I asked him, looking off into the distance.
"Could we take a walk?" he asked me, his voice a little shaky.
I nodded. A walk sounds good right about now.
Connor nodded at me and we both began walking. A little down the hill from my school, there was a bush. The both of us decided to take a walk in there. It was quiet at first, the silence awkward.
"Do you want me to take your bag for you?" Connor asked.
I shook my head, telling him, "No thanks."
He nodded, the quiet taking over again. After about five minutes of silence, Connor finally began to talk. "So, um, Mia," he began, his voice really shaky, "I need to tell something to you. I haven't told anyone about this in a while, so I'm not sure how to go about this," he admitted.
I continued to watch as Connor fiddled with his fingers, looking down at the ground. He looked up. Back down. Back up. Huffed. Opened his mouth.
"Okay, so." Connor stopped walking, making me stop. "The other night when I...lost control," I saw guilt flash in his eyes, "I bit you. You asked why you were bleeding. I never answered your question. The first time I walked you home, you were attacked by a man. Again, you asked why he had bitten you and why you were bleeding. I ignored that question as well. But now, I'm going to answer these questions. I just need you to promise to not run away, scream, be scared, or tell anyone. Can you do that?"
Nodding, I was utterly confused about what I was going to be told. But I was glad that my questions were going to be answered.
Noticing that I wasn't going to say anything, Connor continued. "Well, Mia, there is something that you need to know about me. I'm not like other guys my age," he said. "I, uh, I...." Connor took a deep breath. "I'm not a human."
Confusion was evident on my face, I could feel that. However, Connor continued, not giving me a chance to say anything.
"What I'm trying to tell you is that I....I'm a vampire, Mia. I know you won't believe me, but I'm being serious. That guy that attacked you...he was also a vampire." As Connor looked over my face, he continued with, "I'm being serious, Mia. I will prove this to you if you want me to."
I didn't know what to do. Vampires?
Vampires don't exist. In movies, yes, but this isn't 'Twilght'. The Cullens aren't here to save us from Laurent, Victoria and James.
Staring right at Connor, I feel my mouth drop open. "Vampires don't exist, Connor." I start to back up, slowly getting ready to run from this nutjob if it comes to it.
He starts to pull at the roots of his hair in obvious frustration and annoyance. He runs his hand over his face and sighs, the noise containing a hint of annoyance also. "Mia, I swear to you, that I am a vampire. I will prove it." Before I can answer him, Connor is halfway across the bush and up in a tree.
"What the-" I started, Connor cutting me off.
"See? How would a normal human get all the way over here in mere seconds?" he shouted across the vacant bush.
I shook my head. "This has gotta be fake," I murmured under my breath, soft enough so that even I could barely hear my own voice.
In about half a second, Connor was right in front of me. "It isn't fake," he says to me. "This is real. 100% real."
Looking at Connor's face, I tried to focus on every inch. He was perfect. Absolutely flawless. His skin was a pale white, nothing marring his true beauty. "So...so," I gulped, taking a breath. "So, does that mean that you have...fangs?"
Connor smiled at me, and I watched as two big canines protruded from his top gums. "Does that answer your question?"
I nodded, feeling my eyes grow. Vampire. I am currently in the presence of a vampire that could kill me.
"I, um, have to go," I squeaked out. "I'll see you later."
"Mia, wait," he said, reaching for my arm. I pulled it away before he could get it, though. "Please don't leave."
Thinking of an excuse, I said, "My mum is expecting me. I have to get home before she gets too worried." Not a complete lie, at least.
I started to walk away, and Connor began walking with me. "Well let me walk with you then."
Shaking my head, I muttered, "I'd rather walk by myself. I need to clear my head."
Connor stopped walking with me after that, and I was left to a very boring, very quiet walk as I pondered over what I had just learnt.
