Slowly peeling my eyes open, I tried to block out the whistling that I was hearing. It kept going, so I sat up and looked around at the complete darkness. Glancing at my clock, I realised that it was twelve o'clock in the morning.
Grumbling, I climbed out of my bed and made my way across the room to the door. As I hit the closed piece of wood, I cursed...quite loudly.
"Mia?" I heard my mother's voice filter into my ears. Opening my door, I glanced out into the hallway. My mother was up, a cup of water in her hands. "What are you doing up?"
"I could ask you the same thing," I said, the words coming out a bit harshly. "I'm sorry," I apologised after. "I guess I'm a bit sleep deprived."
My mum gave me a strange look, her brown eyes weary. "Sleep deprived? You've been asleep since you got home."
I shook my head. "Not exactly true. I was just hanging up in my room for about an hour." And by "hanging", I actually meant looking at a wall and crying, while I curled up to my bear.
"Oh." My mother looked at me strangely. "Are you okay?"
I nodded, not really sure of what I was feeling. "Just a bit hungry," I smiled slightly.
Mum nodded as though she understood. "There's some lasagne in the fridge if you want some. You missed out on dinner."
Why thank you, Captain Obvious. "Thanks." My mum nodded and then walked off, leaving me alone. "I'm fine, thank you." Rolling my eyes, I went downstairs. Sighing, I went straight for the cupboard and got out some pop tarts. If I was going to eat this late, it wasn't going to be for some lasagne.
Popping the tarts into the toaster, I poured myself some chocolate milk and jumped up onto the counter. I was going to go onto my phone until I realised it was upstairs.
"Lonely?" I heard someone ask me. Jumping, I looked around.
"Get out of my head," I grumbled once I realised that it was Connor. "Seriously. I'm not in the mood, Connor."
A laugh echoed around the room. "Oh, I'm not in your head, sweetheart." Narrowing my eyes, I glanced into the darkness and saw that, in fact, Connor was in my kitchen.
"What are you doing in here?" I hissed to him.
He smiled. "What are you doing in here with the light off?"
"I like the dark," I mumbled back. "You have to answer my question."
Another grin. "I noticed you were upset, so I came to check in on you."
Well that was nice of him. Sort of. "You couldn't wait until tomorrow, why?" I snapped at him.
"Gee. Is someone on their rags?"
"My what?" I asked confused. "Rags?"
A smirk came onto Connor's face. "Think. Think real hard. What do guys usually ask when a girl is mad?"
Without thinking, I shot out the first thing that came to my mind. "They ask if the girl is on their period." Almost three seconds after what I said, I shrieked. "'No. Ew. Wouldn't you know if I was?"
Connor grimaced, but his eyes shone a little. "I'm in your head. Not your body. I can't tell if you're on your period or not." A look washed over his face. "But could you imagine if I could tell when you were close to your time of month. I could just be like, 'Oh, yeah, blood is about to come out of you'. Damn, that would be weird."
By this point, I could tell how disgusted my face would look. "Stop right there. I don't want to imagine that."
Connor smiled. A broad grin that actually suited his face. "You get freaked out easy."
