Goldenlight followed behind Featherpelt as he led the dawn patrol. Silverpaw and Shadepaw followed closely behind.
They rounded the borders around High Rocks, the gathering place, and wove their way through the trees. The greenleaf sun was hot on their pelts, so they stopped for a drink at the river that made up the FireClan-WaterClan border.
Goldenlight felt Silverpaw stiffen beside her. Goldenlight raised her head and drew in the hot air over the scent glands in her mouth. Her eyes widened with alarm.
"WaterClan!" She yowled as a group of warriors jumped out at them.
She recognized Smokeeye, Foxfur, Darkpelt, Flameclaw, and Bramblepaw. She launched herself into battle, attacking with tooth and claw. The FireClan cats were outnumbered, and she soon heard a yowl of pain escape her deputy's throat. She threw off Smokeeye's white figure and ran to Featherpelt as the apprentices chased the cats over the border.
She didn't even notice that they retreated without any protest.
She knelt over Featherpelt, sniffing the large wound that trailed down his soft underbelly.
"Silverpaw! Fetch Herbfur quickly!" Goldenlight meowed at her apprentice who raced off to get the medicine cat.
Featherpelt jerked below Goldenlight's paws, drawing her attention again.
"Gold......Goldenlight.....I am going to join StarClan." He rasped, his voice gurgling with his blood.
"No, Featherpelt. You can leave!" She exclaimed, trying desperately to figure out what to do.
"I see StarClan cats...." Featherpelt said as his eyes grew glassy.
Then, he was gone.
Goldenlight howled her grief to the sky. She had grown quite fond of Featherpelt, and now, he hunted with StarClan.
She turned to Shadepaw.
"Help me get him back to camp." Goldenlight mumbled to the grief stricken apprentice.
She and Shadepaw lifted the deputy and carried him back to camp.

"What?! They ambushed you on FireClan territory?" Nightstar yowled in protest.
The two apprentices nodded grimly.
"Out of nowhere!" Silverpaw cried.
"And when Smokeeye gave the fatal blow, they just ran away." Shadepaw said calmly.
It was weird. Ever since the attack, the apprentice had been shockingly relaxed.
Nightstar sighed. He leapt down from High Ledge and padded over to his deputy's still body. He touched his nose to his fur.
"It was too soon, my friend. You were deputy for many moons, and I will not forget you." He whispered into the deputy's pelt.
He stood then, and jumped back onto High Ledge.
"While all cats are still here, I will name a new deputy. I say these words before Featherpelt's body so that he may hear and approve my choice. The new deputy of FireClan will be, Goldenlight." Nightstar said, and jumped from the ledge once again and padded over to Featherpelt to share tongues one last time.
After a few brief and non-heartfelt congratulations, Goldenlight joined him there. She sat there, nose pressed against Featherpelt's cold flank for most of the night. Eventually, she stood and made her way back to the warrior's den where she settled down next to Dappleflower. There, next to the warmth of her friend, she fell asleep.

Goldenlight padded through a beautiful open meadow. It smelled of flowers and prey. She soon caught another scent.
'Spottedleaf!' She thought.
The beautiful tortoiseshell she-cat appeared before her, her warm scent wrapping Goldenlight in comforting embrace.
"Hello, Goldenlight." She meowed sitting in the middle meadow, her tail wrapped neatly around her paws.
"Why have you come to me? What do you need to tell me?" Goldenlight asked, siting in front of the former ThunderClan medicine cat.
Spottedleaf's eyes clouded with pain and sadness.
"Goldenlight, a great time of evil is plaguing your clans." She whispered.
"Clans?" Goldenlight asked.
"ThunderClan and FireClan are both in grave danger. Squirrelpaw has gone to save ThunderClan. But FireClan..." Spottedleaf drifted off, turning her head to blink away the small tears that had formed.
"What about FireClan?" Goldenlight asked urgently.
"The light will come to power, guiding with a gold heart. But the night must fall, the moon will disappear, and the shadows will destroy the fire." Spottedleaf said and turned to bolt out of the meadow.
Suddenly, the sky grew dark. The night and the sky glittered with beautiful stars. But the beautiful golden sun destroyed the dark night, chasing away the moon and bathing the meadow with golden light. Then the shadows created by the sun's rays grew larger, until they claimed the sky completely.
Dread filled Goldenlight's belly as she let out a terrified yowl. The shadows had one.
