Chapter Twenty-One

"And with the right stuff, we'll be able to distract them for enough time, so that we can destroy the supplies" I finish explaining, whilst Katniss stamps out the small flame we created for the breakfast. 

"I'll go have a look around" Katniss decides, grabbing hold of her bow.

"And as for me, I'll be on guard in case any if us get caught in a fight, if I don't kill them then you'll at least have some time"

"Right, destroy the supplies and don't get caught, got it" Rue doesn't look so sure about the whole plan. Maybe she feels intimidated, I mean, I would too if i had an alliance with an experienced killer and a sponsor favorite.  "Is that alright with you Rue?" She snaps out of her little trance, and nods.

"Good"

"I've found it" Katniss comes running back "I've found the stuff, and I've already taken the liberty of pulling some down."

"Great, well then let's go"

 "Now this green stuff is going to smoke like crazy so as soon as you light it move onto the next fire" Katniss tells Rue, as they slump the large green leaves on the pile. "Light this one last, and I'll destroy the stuff while they're chasing us"

I stop sharpening my knife "Right, well then lets go" I heave myself off the tree I was leaning against.

"Wait, we need a signal, in case one of us gets held up" Thinking about it, it sounds like a good idea, but what's the use of it?

"Okay like what?" Rue looks around, and spots my bird necklace, the one given to me by Flavius before the Games, that's loosely hanging out of my jacket, and looks at Katniss' Mockingjay pin, I wonder where she got that.

"Here watch this" And she sings a little melody, which the birds in the trees copy. Just in case they're mutts, I unwrap my whip from my wrist. 

"Mockingjays" Katniss looks up "That's great"

"Yeah fantastic" I mutter.

"Back home we use them to signal all the time" We all look around

"You try" She tells Katniss. At first she hesitates, but then whistles four, simple notes, which the Mockingjays copy.

"Okay, so if we hear that, it means, we're okay, and we'll be back real soon"

"We're gonna be okay." Rue smiles a little, and then wraps her skinny arms around Katniss' waist.

 "Hey... We'll see her see her for supper" I tell her, and she pulls out of the hug.

"Okay."

"Okay, see you later" Katniss nods to me.

"Yeah, I'll stick around, just in case" And with that, she walks away.

"Right, I'll be up in the trees"

It doesn't take long for Rue to set the fire, in fact not long at all, but it doesn't take long for the Careers to come running either.

"C'mon, lets quickly light the others" We both run to the other one, and set it alight.

"How many more now?"

"Only one, that was the last, Katniss said we need to light it when they come to this one"

"Well then let's get out of here" We're about to move when I hear someone talk.

"Guys c'mon, what if this is a trap? There was no one at the other fire" Marvel. District 1. Career. Brilliant.

"We've trained for this, don't be a coward"
