After some time, Alice got to see everyone and they agreed to not discuss the miscarriage until she was out of the hospital. The doctor advised Alice to get some rest and allowed Tom to remain in the room while the others said their goodbyes. Tom and Alice had both fallen asleep with him sitting in the chair, holding her hand. Tom groaned as he found himself waking up, blinking his eyes open. He could faintly make out Alice's voice and he turned to face her.
"What is it?" Tom asked.
"I think it's happening." Alice winced.
Tom felt Alice squeeze his hand tightly as he sat up from his chair. She then pulled her hand from his and gripped the side of the bed, biting down on her lip. Tom hushed her as he laid his right hand against her cheek, caressing the skin gently.
"It's okay. Just breathe through it. Breathe, Alice." Tom whispered.
Alice did as he said and whimpered softly as she scrunched her face together.
"Try and stay calm, okay? You need to stay calm."
Tom pressed the red button on the bed quickly before Alice could see him do it.
"That's it. Keep breathing. You got this. It'll be okay. I got you."
Alice furrowed her brow seeing a few nurses enter the room and turn on the light. They paused for a moment just watching Tom as he coached Alice while running his fingers through her hair to calm her down and pressing kisses to her head. They then politely asked Tom to step to the side as they went to help Alice. Tom sat down in his seat and watched them. He occasionally whispered words of encouragement to Alice as time went on.
One of the nurses then directed her attention up at Alice and smiled weakly.
"You do have the option of having us cremate the remains, taking them home to arrange your own burial, or you can make no decision at all." The nurse told her.
Alice looked over at Tom and took a breath before answering.
"I want to do my own burial." Alice replied.
"Okay." The nurse replied.
After some time, Alice had passed the pregnancy tissue and the nurses got her cleaned up and got it all in a specialized bag.
"You may still experience some cramping and you will most likely bleed for a few more weeks but that's normal. Until you're discharged, we will keep this safe for you." The nurse told her.
"Thank you." Alice whispered.
As the nurses left, Tom went back to her side and kissed her quickly.
"You did a good job. I'm so proud of you, love." Tom spoke softly.
Hours later, the doctor came by and had another scan done on Alice's head. He told them that the swelling had gone down and did not believe Alice would have to stay in the hospital. He told them that the contusion would take about three to six months to completely heal. He handed Tom a paper of symptoms that Alice may experience during her recovery and that if he saw the swelling getting worse or if she experienced any symptoms to their extreme, that she would be brought to a hospital immediately. He then told them that in her recovery, it would be best for her to get as much rest as possible and refrain from any strenuous activities. Tom and a nurse held her arms as they helped her to sit up. Alice groaned as she furrowed her brows. Her vision went out of focus and they kept her in place to allow her time to adjust. They then moved her to let her feet dangle off the side of the bed. When she was ready, she slid down the bed and her legs shook as her feet made contact with the tiled floor.
