Malakai
I threw my suit on the bed and studied it. Since the theme was the 90's I had picked out a powder blue tux with a cummerbund to wrap around my mid section. I was going to wear a gold hoop in my left ear to really fuck it up. I sighed and flopped on the bed, checking the time. Two hours until homecoming and I wasn't excited in the least. Jaylon barged in my room, throwing a basketball my way. I caught it just in time and he slit his eyes at me.
"Yo, lets go shoot some hoops or some shit."
I laughed and threw the ball back back at him. "Aight bet. Be ready for this ass whoopin." We left the apartment, making our way to the basketball court around the block. Jaylon passed me the ball and we got to playing. About half way through he looked at me suspiciously, "what's got you in a mood nigga?"
I dribbled the ball quickly, making my way around him and shooting it. It landed in the hoop with a "swoosh" and I caught it before it could hit the concrete.
"Ion know what you mean. And are you actually gonna play or continue to let me beat your ass Jay? For real, I'm not even trying." I joked lightly. He snatched the ball from me unexpectedly.
"Nigga you know exactly what I mean. Is this about Maria hoe ass?" He was dribbling the ball absentmindedly now.
I smacked my lips. "Maria's not a hoe. And no, it's not about her."
"Then what is it about? You been acting funny ever since that fight with you and pops. You know, the one you won't tell me about." He said sounding annoyed.
I groaned. "Pass me the ball Jaylon, that's if we still playing. If not, I gotta go get ready for homecoming." He rolled his eyes, but threw the ball at my chest.
"I'm game Kai."
When I got back upstairs I took a shower, pulling on my tuxedo and placing the gold earring in my left ear. I sprayed some cologne on and made sure I had my wallet. Noah texted me, letting me know he was downstairs and I let him know I was coming. When I walked into the living room, pops was seated in his recliner watching a basketball game. I glanced at the screen.
"Who's playing?", I said.
He grunted. "Knicks versus the Cavaliers." He looked up at me. "Where you going?"
"To homecoming, I'm going to pick up Maria."
He just gave me a "hmph" and turned back to the screen. "Ain't that Ms. Franklin's daughter? Tell her I said hi."
"I will pop." I muttered, making my way to the door. I climbed in the car with Kelly, Noah, and Sasha.
"Nigga you didn't tell me you was gonna be rocking a gold hoop. That's a good idea." Said Noah, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.
I chuckled, "Yeah right, nigga you can't afford this."
He sucked his teeth. "Whatever. Shit probably fake anyway." When we pulled up to Maria's I got out and knocked on the door.
Ms. Franklin answered, smiling at me warmly. "Oh Malakai, Maria's just finishing her hair, she'll be out in a sec sweetheart."
I nodded and sat on the couch. "Pop said hi Ms. Franklin."
She beamed. "That man is always working hard. He must get a little lonely sometimes with your mother being gone and all. Would you like something to drink baby?"
I wrinkled my nose. "Nah I'm good."
Maria finally came out and smirked at me. She was wearing a velvet burgundy dress with matching lipstick. Her long wavy hair was up in a high ponytail and she was wearing chunky heels. We took some pictures for Ms. Franklin before heading out. Maria and Sasha started talking about girly shit while I messed around with Kelly. I sneaked a glance at Maria as she talked animatedly. She was looking bad, but not as bad as I had imagined Nyla would have looked tonight. I imagined her soft brown skin under me, long lashes fanning out over her eyes as I curled my hands in her curly mess. I was snapped out of my thoughts as we pulled up the school.
