Nyla
"Do you see it?"
"No, what am I supposed to be seeing?" I gazed at the screen attentively while the ultrasound technician tried to show me the fetus.
"Well, your baby's fingers and toes are well defined at this point. He or she is also capable of making facial expressions-oh wait!"
She pointed to the bottom of the screen, "See there?"
I watched as my baby stuck its thumb in its mouth and laughed, "Yo!...oh shit."
I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. These days were the only days that made me less stressed and more happy. It still all felt surreal to me. I was officially five months tomorrow.
"Alright well, everything looks healthy. You sure you don't want to know the gender?"
"Yeah."I rubbed my belly, "Hey bubba." I whispered, feeling some movement.
I made my way out to where my room mate was, waiting in the car. Not too long after Malakai left I had posted an anonymous ad online, knowing that I couldn't afford the living expenses on my own.
Her name was Aubrey and she felt bad about my situation. She not only took me to my appointments, but also paid most of the bills.
Lucky me.
"How was it?" Her green eyes assessed me carefully.
"Baby's good, but I'm starving as shit. Pull up to the Mcdonald's" I said tiredly. This damn baby was draining my life force and at this point, I just wanted him or her out of me and into my arms.
"Sure."
We got there and I slid out of the car. Aubrey tried to help me but I waved her away, "Girl, I'm pregnant not crippled. And I'm all good, I can still sorta see my feet."
She giggled, "Whatever you say then."
When we went inside she told me to sit down and I gladly listened. Aubrey came back with our food not too much later and I thanked her.
There were nuggets, fries, two Big Macs, hash browns, and a Mcflurry-everything I liked.
I immediately broke off a piece of hash brown and dipped it in my Mcflurry, "This taste bomb as fuck, try it."
"I'm good, that's all you." She looked disgusted. I continued to eat and gazed behind her to see two men staring at us from another table.
They were both pale, lanky, and tall. They were also whispering and pointing at us, looking repulsed.
At first I couldn't figure out why and then I peeped that they had also noticed I was pregnant and Aubrey was across from me.
I grabbed her hand, "Yo, kiss me real quick?"
She narrowed her eyes at me, "what?"
"Just kiss me, and ask questions later." I assured her. She sighed. By now she was used to my spontaneous pettiness.
Aubrey leaned forward and pressed her lips to mined as I grabbed her face to make it seem real. It only lasted a second before we both heard two chairs scrapping across the floor.
The two men were leaving and they cast us hateful glares as the walked by.
"Hell is the only place for people like you." One of them snarled.
I smirked, "We're gonna have the best lesbo sex at home, wanna come and watch?"
They almost looked sick as they left and I giggled uncontrollably as soon as they were gone. Aubrey couldn't help but also laugh though she tried to hide it.
"Hey, you a pretty good kisser." I raised my eyebrows at her and continued to eat.
She just blushed and we ate in silence for a minute. "Hey Ny?"
"What's up?"
"What...what happened to your babies father? You've never mentioned him."
I knew this question was gonna come up sooner or later, I just expected it sooner. She probably avoided the topic for so long to be polite. Things were so different out here in the west.
"I think you mean sperm donor", I said. "And he a piece of shit." I muttered without hesitation.
"What do you mean?"
I looked at her like she was crazy, "Do I have to connect the dots for you? He's no good, he left and honestly I don't wanna discuss his stupid ass."
"Oh, sorry." She said softly.
I tried not to think about Malakai, but when I did, I was pissed all over again. He left me, but not before saying and doing some real hurtful shit that I won't ever forget.
Not to say I wasn't in the wrong, but I didn't make this damn baby by myself. Despite this, there was always that underlying ache in my chest that reminded me consistently how much I missed him more than anything. I hated that feeling, so I always shoved it to the back.
"You good, I gotta go piss."
I got up from the table and went to find the bathroom. Once I finished that daily routine, I started back to the table. I was wringing my hands out when I noticed that something was amiss. I stopped and took a good look at my surroundings. The people in the fast food restaurant didn't seem familiar. They actually seemed out of place somehow.
They were a lot of men seated in different spots around the room, all of them dressed casually. They weren't even eating anything, most of them just sat around with stoic expressions on their faces as if they were patiently waiting for something. I clenched my fingers and looked around until I spotted Aubrey. Relief looked my veins as I made my way back over to her.
"We should get the fuck out of here, this place deadass giving me the creeps..."
I trailed off as I realized there was someone sitting next to her in the booth. She slowly turned her head towards me, utter fear etched on her face. The silver gun pressed to her side glinted as the man held it steady.
Castillo presented me with a chilling grin, baring his perfectly white teeth.
"Found you, princesa."
