Malakai

I pulled my hoodie over my head as the rain pelted down harder and harder. Traffic dragged on beside me as I made my way around the block. As noisy as it was, there was something about living in the city that calmed me.

Ever since I was little it was just me, my pops, and my little brother, Jaylon. Bronx, New York is much cleaner than it used to be when I was growing up but sometimes it seems like there ain't shit to do but sell and gang bang. I could tell anyone out here that it ain't worth it, not even to keep food on the table.

I heard someone call my name. "Malakai! Come over after school okay baby? My shower head busted again."

I gave Ms. Franklin a half-hearted smile and nodded. "I gotchu Ms. Franklin." I'd be lyin if I said I was helping out to be nice. Ms. Franklin's daughter, Maria, had a nice ass on her and she was almost always there when Ms. Franklin asked me to help out.

"Well I'm not gonna keep you out in this rain any longer boy. Hurry up and get to school now." She stepped back inside her tiny apartment and I kept walking. I trudged up the stairs of Summerville High School and threw my hood off, making my way to first period. I rounded the corner to see a familiar looking girl leaned up against the lockers. She was being straddled by some nigga, and they looked to be in a heated conversation. As I passed by, we locked eyes and I recognized her from Marlowe's from a couple days ago. I turned just as I saw him kiss on her neck and her fingers grasp his arm. My dick reacted full force when a soft sigh of ecstasy escaped her lips.

I made my way to class and ignored the teachers complaints of how this was my 40th time being tardy.

My boy Kelly leaned over in his seat, "Yo you comin' to practice after school today?"

I shook my head, "Nah ion feel like it. Tell coach I'm sick or some shit."

He groaned. "Nigga I can't keep covering for yo ass. Watchu been up to lately anyway? You really telling me pussy is more important than your football career?"

I shook my head, "It ain't a career Kel. I'll be there tomorrow, swear on my momma grave."

He flinched, "Yeah aight."

After school I banged on Ms.Franklin's door. Instead of her, I got Maria. She smiled at me, "Hey my mom's not here, but she said you were stopping by." She said in her thick Spanish accent.

I grinned back, "That's cool, I'll only be a minute."

Maria jerked forward, her body shaking in the process. I ran my fingers through her hair as she hit her climax, lost in my thoughts. When her moans finally subsided I eased from behind her and slid the condom off, tossing it in the waste bin next to her bed. She looked up at me lazily, "Where you going?"

I yanked my jeans up and glanced at her once before making my way to her bedroom door. "I promised your moms I would fix the shower head." She followed me into the bathroom and watched as I took the toolkit from under the sink and got to work.

When Ms Franklin came home she asked if I wanted to stay for dinner, but I declined and went home. When I got in pops still wasn't home and neither was Jaylon. I dialed his cell and he picked up on the fifth ring.

"Yo." I heard laughing in the background.

I clenched my teeth, "Where the hell you at? It's getting late and pops ain't home yet but if he was, you be in a lot of mothafuckin trouble."

I practically heard his eye roll. "Will you calm yo nerd ass down. I'm on my way nigga."

"Just get here." I growled.

"Aight bro. One."

I sighed. "Love". and then hung up. He was gonna end up in jail or dead just like these other hood niggas if he didn't straighten up. I made my way to my bed room and threw my shit on the small desk which was already piled high with books. In fact my whole room was. I had two shelves, each one containing a little over a hundred books each.

My pops knew about my reading habit.

"Put down that damn book boy, and go play outside. Do something productive.

My momma cast him and annoyed glance, "Gerald why can you leave the boy alone? He's gonna grow up and be an educated black man. Ain't nothing wrong with that." She ran her hands through my hair and I found myself leaning into her hand, capturing that smile in my memory.

My thoughts were interrupted by someone slamming the front door. Jaylon called out to me, "Aye yo Kai!" He stopped in my doorway. "Do your nerdy ass got a minute? I'm hungry."

I ordered a pizza and we sat in front of the TV, flipping through the channels since we didn't have cable. I flipped the TV off and headed to bed after cleaning up. Pops wasn't coming home tonight.

But that wasn't out of the ordinary.

I felt around the sheets and and sat up dreary, wiping the crust out of my eyes. There was a throbbing in my lip and I felt around to find out it was busted. I blinked a few times trying to remember how I got it but nothing came to mind.

I put on a robe and trudged out to the living room. Reece was grabbing his bag and finishing of a bowl of lucky charms. His curly hair looked extra light and fluffy on top today and his black tee accentuated his muscles. He looked in my general direction, "You not even ready for school. What happened to your lip?"

I shook my head. "I ain't going." I said ignoring the last question.

Reece shook his head. "Aight then stay in the apartment Nyla. I'm not playing."

I rolled my eyes in response and walked up to him, putting my head on his chest. "Okay papa."

He grabbed his phone and headed out the door without giving me a second glance. At this point in time he was all I had. I ran away from home about a year ago and with no where to go, he offered me a place to stay.. for free.

Reece was nineteen going on twenty, and trying to get through his second senior year at high school. I took my time rolling a blunt and climbed out onto the fire escape, gazing out into the gloom that littered the sky. Just as I was dozing off I heard a knock on the door. I wiped my eyes and went to answer it. Lucas Thompson or "King" as he liked to call himself stood on the other side of the door frame. King was supposed to be on of the biggest kingpins in the Bronx. He leaned against it, giving me a sly smile.

"What's good Nyla? I tried the doorbell but I guess it doesn't work."

I didn't bother telling him that Reece broke it during one of our heated arguments. "What do you want King?"

He just kept on smiling."I think you know baby."

I took a puff of my blunt, moving it to the other side of my mouth. I considered it before looking him in the eyes. "Fine. Don't you have anything better to do?" I said leading him to the back.

He chuckled a bit, "Not at the moment."
