I watch the man walk down the bumpy thing people walk on until he turns a corner that leads to; to...Darn I can't see it. I crane my neck until it bumps into the glass of the window, "Oof!" I rub my cheek. For a few moments I jiggle the thing for the windows but, I can't quite figure it out. As I fuss with it I see a woman who looks a little like Wendy. She has a basket of sorts in her gloved hands as she approaches the steps to the house. I stare at her in curiosity as she searches for something in the basket. Thinking, she blows her hair out of her face and her eyes connect with mine. They're beautiful, like the color of...something, wait our eyes connected! I throw myself onto the floor and out of view; my breath quickening. I hear the door to the house shut and the sound of fast footsteps. Frantically, I look for somewhere to hide. I hear the woman from outside stop when the woman called Nana says, "Do you need anything, Ma'am? Should I take your coat and things?" I silently thank the old woman as I find my hiding place. The woman halts in her answer, "Uh, no. Thank you, Nana." She says sounding like she passes the woman. Footsteps thud up the stairs and are almost down the hallway, "Mother, how was your outing?" a sticky sweet voice says. Wendy. That word again; mother. What is a mother? I wonder but, shake the thought away. On my elbows I quickly drag my body over the carpet. "Oh, it was fine Wendy. Thank you." She says. My hair gets stuck under my elbow and my head jerks back, I suppress a gasp and continue my trek. "Hello, mother. Have you seen Mr. Snuggles?" A light pair of feet skips. "Hello, Michael. No, I haven't seen Mr. Snuggles. Perhaps he's in the room." She says. The doorknob begins to turn just as I face the springs of the mattress. I breathe a sigh of relief as they enter the room followed by the thundering of running feet. "Michael," John says out of breath. "I found Mr. Snuggles." He says. I watch Michael's little feet turn around in excitement, "You did?!" he says. Michael shrieks as John surprises him with Mr. Snuggles. "Yay!" Squeals Michael and runs out of the room. "Mother, are you okay?" John asks. "Yes," she says as she continues to inspect the room. "Are you looking for anything?" he asks. "Yes, actually I am. I could've sworn I just saw a girl in here." She says rising from looking inside the chest of John's old clothes. "It might've been your reflection, Mother." He suggests. "No, she had hair dark as night and had to be younger than I." She says. "Perhaps you might've look-" He starts. "She was pretty and mysterious looking; like out of a--" the Mother begins breathlessly when I hear, "Mary! Darling are you home?" a booming voice says. "Oh, that's your father. I must be going." She says as she elegantly leaves the room her skirts trailing behind her. "Yes, dear?" she says as she descends the staircase. "That was a close one wasn't it?" he says. I pull myself from under the bed, "Yeah, it was." John whips around with a surprised expression. I smile, my cheeks heating up as I continue to tug myself from under Michael's bed. He smiles back in return. "John!" Wendy screeches. John's face changes immediately to a stern expression as Wendy slams the door. "What was that?!" she yells. "That was too close! I had to bring Father into this! I can't believe you made me cover for you!" she continues. "Well, I'm sorry if you had to cover me once correlated to the many times I've covered for you!" he shouts. "Well, you need to come up with something for her. I don't need to risk anything for her after what she did to me." she says her hands on her light blue night gown. "What did she do?" John asks. "She knows." She says eyeing me. "What do I know?" I ask confused sitting up. She rolls her eyes at me, "Nothing. Did you come up with a plan?" she crosses her arms. "I already did." He says.
