BALIN POV
She was huddled on her knees, sobbing. There was nothing any of us could say or do to make her feel better. What do you tell a person who wants so badly to help, but isn’t allowed to, who isn’t allowed to put her neck out on the line as well? It was heart breaking really, twisted, but heart breaking.
“Shh, shh, shhh.” Fili said falling to his knees beside her, holding her into his chest.
“Balin.” My brother called. I turned to him. “We can’t just sit here, we have to help them.”
“Dwalin there is nothing we can do. We are dealing with supernatural forces here, not orcs or goblins. These are angels and demons and destruction and fire and all the stuff nightmares are made of. I’m afraid we have no way to help them.”
“He’s right. The best thing you can do for your girls right now is keep yourselves out of harm’s way. As much as i want to help them to, even I haven’t the power to do so, no one on middle earth does.”
“Except them.” We all turned to Kili. “They do.” Thorin placed his hand on his nephew’s shoulder. Kili shrugged him off and went to Jay’s side. He and his brother tried their best to comfort her. We set up camp, not being sure what else to do. The sun was beginning to set before anyone spoke.
“Is anyone hungry?” Jay said, trying to hold back tears and distract us.
“Jayceeael, there’s no way anyone could eat right now, thank you though.” Bombur said. Everyone was too anxious to be surprised. Our fire made a small ring of light around us; we all stared at it again, silent. Then something happened, a rustle in the bushes. We all stood, taking up our weapons. Kili shot an arrow into the bush.
“Hold your fire! Hold it!” Kandi emerged, Dok as well, they were carrying Baradok, and she was unconscious, beaten up pretty bad. Dori rolled out his bed roll for his claimer, a few of us started to gather stuff to help Dori and Kandi get her cleaned up. An hour or so passed since our three companions rejoined us. They were telling us of the events and how they had no clue what had happened to the other girls. They were separated; Dok was the last to see Vivi, running into battle to help Ali. Jay started sobbing again, waking up Baradok, who started to fight us off until she realized who we were.
“C’mon, there’s a light!” I heard someone whisper. I turned and watched as Bridane and Emendusk clambered through the bush. They were both cut up and bloodied. They saw us, smiled and put their arms over each other’s shoulders, walking closer to the fire. They sat down, Gloin and Ori both started towards them.
“What of Ali? Where is Vivi? Are they hurt? Kros? Pin? The others where are they?” Jay was starting to go slightly insane with worry. I sat her down and told her to take a few deep breathes and that everything would be alright. Just as I said that the bushes parted again. Kros and Malmara were carrying someone, Serena was sobbing in their arms. Kros had one of her hands pulled towards her chest, then I realized something was wrong, there was no hand. Serena was bleeding heavily from her left leg, which was completely severed to her knee. Everyone immediately started tending to them. Malmara wasn’t injured as badly.
“They ambushed us, twenty to two, luckily Malmara showed up when she did or I might be missing a lot more than my hand.” Kros explained, holding the bandages Gandalf had wrapped tightly around her wrist. Bifur started signing to her, she started then stopped, she looked down at her wrist, and there was no hand to sing with. We all looked at her, she looked back up at us, then burst into tears and sobs, Bifur sighed and sat down with her. Once she stopped crying he pointed to her hand, then to the axe in his head. She seemed to get what he was saying and smiled back at him. Serena had passed out from the amount of blood she had lost, we had to make her a special place to lay, it was angled so her leg was higher than her head and chest. Thorin and Oin had managed to get the bleeding to slow to almost a stop; Gandalf used a little magic and made it stop completely, though he was unable to regrow it.
