They describe themselves in the mirror.
Example: I look in the mirror to see my curly brown hair on my shoulders. My nerdy glasses was looking super weird and nerdy but I didn't care. I was wearing jeans and makeup. Tons of it. Blah blah blah people say I look pretty blah blah blah!
WHY IT IS ANNOYING: This cliche is necessary if you want to explain your characters. But there are also many other ways to show off your characters looks.
HOW TO FIX THIS: Okay, there are only four solutions to this:
1. You need to get somebody on that cover!
2. Cast! Just try and find somebody for the role there is Face Claims books for a reason
3. Let the readers use their imaginations! Like.....wouldn't that be cool? The person doesn't tell anything about themselves so they can be basically whatever you want them too. (also called a reader insert)
4. Give your readers an idea. Like "I flipped my purple hair over my shoulder"
